Well, she did it again. The wife and I went to the Panhandle Friday night to see if we could get her a shot at the buck she calls "Crabby" a 4 year old 10 point. She spotted this buck a couple months ago on camera and said "I like him! He has those cool crabby claws up front and those cool white eye circles. He's pretty" I knew right then his days were numbered!
Saturday morning we did a scouting hunt for some hunters that are coming in this coming weekend. Got to watch the 5x5 mule deer buck that I've been seeing around lately hiding in the brush with his lady friend. He was doing a GREAT job of hiding! Watched a few other deer but was a slow morning all in all.
Saturday night I ask the wife do you want to hunt Big Boy Blind or the 1/4 section? "The 1/4 section of course that's where Crabby hangs out" Only one problem the wind is all wrong for that feeder we'd have to sit out in the pasture to the west of the feeder and be VERY still! She says "OK" so away we go. I drive into the field in The Reaper and push the weeks down to make a path so we can see the feeder through the 6 foot tall weeds. Go park The Reaper bring the folding chairs back and we sit out in the WIDE FREAKIN OPEN there wasn't a weed taller than 3 foot within 10 feet of us and we're 88 yards from the feeder with a wheat field for the background. I'm thinking there's NO WAY we don't get busted but hey she want's this buck so I'll try anything once. I had no more than said "we are going to have to be still as stones or we're going to get busted" when out walks this little yearling buck. He looks our way about 10 times while sucking up all the corn in sight but doesn't seem to concerned. I get my Iphone out and take a few pics and tell her if he heads this way just sit TOTALLY still and see how close he gets we have the wind and the sun at our backs. Sure enough he heads our way though the tall weeds and show up 22 yards away to the left of a big tree He looks us over and decides we aren't a threat and moves back across our laid down weeds at 20 yards. I'm thinking this is just too cool here we are out in the open and we've got deer at 20 yards there's just NO WAY this hunt could get better. WRONG it's not 10 min later and she says "deer" I look up and sure enough here comes "Crabby" He looks our way at least 4 times before walking in the feed pen, as soon as he turns he back she gets her gun up on the bog pod. I'm watching through my knocks and every time he looks our way I just know he's going to hear my heart beating out of my chest and bolt. He finally turns broad side and get's clear of a T-post and she ABSOLUTELY CRUSHES him with her Ruger No 1 270! I don't think I've ever seen a buck slam to the ground like he'd had a ton of bricks dropped on him before it was awesome!!! After a few hugs, kisses and a prayer to the Good Lord above for the harvest we went and took a closer look at him. He was a little busted up but we will have the taxi fix that.
