I hate looking through a scope at night for moving targets. I have shot a couple of friend's eotech's and they seem great. Can someone with experience tell me the realistic expectations on accuracy at say 100 yrds with the 1 moa dot without magnification.

The eotechs and aimpoints or any RDS are plenty accurate to take 100yrd standing target humanely. A running target can only come from experience with an RDS. I'd say 3-4 " at 100 yrds is a good estimate. . How good of a shooter are you ?

I believe the dot on most EOTechs is a 1MOA dot, so in theory you could obtain 1-2" groups. That said, the reticle on my 512.A65 always bled a lot, so it was hard to obtain precision accuracy. I think HBone is right, 3-4" at 100 yards with a decent shooting AR.

An accuracy issues are not with the Eotech sights themselves. They are a quality sight. If YOU can shoot accurately and have a rifle and ammo that are capable in the proper lighting, there is no reason you can't shoot a 1" group at 100 yards.

With that said, the "bleeding" is reticle bloom typically associated with using the sight is bright light. It is common with red dot sights. Some people understand how to work with this and some don't. I have watched guys shoot 1" groups with a 4 MOA Aimpoint. I don't personally know how this happens because I shoot a 3-4" group with a 4 MOA Aimpoint, off of sandbags, but I have seen it done. Of course, I can't shoot a 1" group with iron sights either at 100 yards, but I have seen it done.

A lot of folks run Eotechs for hogs and think they are great. If you like the sight, then it is a quality option for you.

Go with a 1x4 vxr or similar. I seen two blown shot opportunities with ep tech because they weren't on. I like a simple less busy red dot

Get the Aimpoint and you can leave it on all the time. They have a 5 year, yes FIVE, battery life. That is contant on use. Turn it on and leave it on for 5yrs and dont worry about it.
With a little practice one can become very good with a red dot. Ya just gotta learn how far to lead it on the run. I got 1.5" groups with CMORE and a 2moa dot on a rest.

that eotech will either break, or you will run out of battery juice on the day of your big hunt, or when you are in the middle of a shoot.

i agree with the aimpoint, for the money, its a much better buy...its what i run on any ar i use.

also you can realistically expect fist sized groupings with any of these type of sights. can you get 1moa, sure but its never ever ever going to be consistent.

Well, I wasn't going to rain on the Eotech parade, but see it is starting. When I use red dots, I use Aimpoint T1s. They are not quite as quick as the Eotechs because of their more limited FOV, but they are reliable and battery life is as claimed. They also come in larger dots, either 2 or 4 moa. Get the 2 moa version.

I like the T1 (or H1) with a 2MOA dot
I can hold a 1-2" group off a bench with one at 100 pretty easily if I can put the dot in a bracket on a target.

I like em for pigs but not for deer.
They suck once it starts to get dark unless you use some illumination.

I'd recommend a 1-4 X20 scope over either for pigs. I am running a 1-4 Nikon Africa scope. When it gets dark I attach an Armasight MR CO Gen 2+ NV Clip-on to the front. You'd appreciate a little magnification I think. I have plenty of experience with Eotechs, Aimpoints and ACOGs. The ACOG also works awesome but that is on my Noveske 5.56 and I prefer a 308 for pigs.

A quality 1x4 or 1x6 will work great as well.
I currently am using a burris E-dot 1.5/6/40 on my primary hunting AR.....6.8
But I am about to get an Aim Point
T/H1 or an M3 for my primary pig gun...also a 6.8

I alternate between a 1.5-6x40 S&B and a T1 on my 68
Out driving around or stalk hunting I run the T1

All right I will bite. I have a Leo 1-3 CQT w/ ill.ret. on my Main pig rifle, 9" SBR 300 BLK with a can on it. I like the 3x when we have good light and down to 1 as light goes away. I have a Mepro M21 (NO batterys) on my 16" 50 Beowulf.
All the others have 3-9s,4-12s, and 6-18s on them. But I like to put the bullets in their ear or eyes if I can. aim

Thanks guys - think I am going to go with the Leupold VXR. Seems it offers the best of both worlds.

That is a great choice for sure. Just know that they are not a TRUE 1x4. It is more like a 1.25x4. There are very few scope that offer a true 1x. One of the is the Millett DMS. The scope is heavier than most but a very good quality scope and the donut dot reticle is great and super fast for moving targets. Oh....and great price too.

I just sighted in my Primary Arms 1-4x w/ illuminted reticle and it is pretty good especially considering I got it and the deluxe mount for under $200. It's definitely no Vortex or Leupold but it get the job done. I've heard its the same scope as the Millet 1-4x with a different reticle.

I tried hunting with my Primary Arm's Micro Dot which is 3 MOA. It can be done but when you get out there and you are getting your target in the sights you'll be thinking to yourself, this would be so much easier just a little magnification. With a 1-4x you can zoom to 1.5x or 2x magnification and still be able to transition quickly.

I would get the red dot for home defense and targets under 100yrds and get a scope for hunting.

Get a flip up magnifier if you need magnification.
