Sorry about the bad news but I do hope you truly learned your lesson. Always bring extra ammo, my rifle holds 4 bullets and I usually have it loaded with 3 and another 6 on my stock. Lesson number two is to always give an animal time to expire. Last year my buddy shot his first buck and was super excited. He wanted to exit the blind but I urged him to wait 30-45 mins. At the 30 min mark a huge dominant buck decided to join the party and I was able to score my best deer yet. If you put pressure on an animal that is bleeding out they will get up and run off only to bleed out in some undisclosed location. It's a waste of a perfectly good deer and a pretty bad experience as a hunter.

A real hunter never returns empty handed. Spending time in the wilderness temporarily satifies the soul, but leaves us longing for more.

If a deer is on the ground raising his head, he doesn't need time to expire. You need to expire him now!!

Anyone who has hunted a period of time has made mistakes. Good you learned a lesson. What I don't understand is how you could sit there and watch it.

Sorry to hear it.

Brother has had that happen where they pick their head up before a couple times, he just shot again.

Like you said, lesson learned. Like ranchman says too, deer are tuff, if he isn't losing any blood it sounds like a flesh/spine wound is very plausible and he may recover. You will probably see him around regular easy food and water.

Out of curiosity, what caliber and bullet were you shooting?

Man I smell a hose job here! Deer went down, never move outside a 3 ft radius, lifted his head and tried to get up a few times and just laid there. But no blood ???

I guess it COULD happen.

Think he has been beat up enough. I'm pretty sure we've all made mistakes. I know I have.

Learn from it and move on. I feel your pain and hope you find him.

You'd be surprised by what a good blood tracking dog can do!!! The last part of training one,( I read up on it), is using a spray bottle to spray blood!!!

Redchevy ... gun is a Remington 700 SPS Variant 308 shooting Hornady STS 150 grain.... and for those who said to give him time to bleed there was no bleeding and I waited 30 minutes before I got out and walked towards him I thought he had died by then and that's when he got up. I'm pretty confident he is still alive, the ranchers have exterminated all the predators in the area due to sheep ranching so I'll be hunting the water tank hard next time
