I am new to duck hunting and I am unclear about which chokes to use. I have heard not to use a full choke with steel shot, but anything that is more open than full is ok.
I heard that a mod choke when shoot steel is equal to a full?
Is this correct?
The shots are usually around 25-40 yards. I bought some Hevi-shot size 4.
Please help out a new duck hunter.
Thanks

Improved cylinder with steel. If you can afford the HS, keep using it. But you don't really need it, steel will always kill birds
Any creature in my vicinity that possesses an explosive penis is going to be killed.

You are right...a factory mod choke with steel would be the equivalent to a full. I'd say 2 out of 3 used IC and the rest use Mod. Of course there are some that will use C or Skeet chokes. Keep in mind the conditions that you are hunting...if you think you are going to be making longer shots then go with the mod...if it's more decoying and in your face then a more open choke has it's advantages.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Thanks for the info. I will use my IC.
Do I need to get a choke that says "Steel" on it or is a factory Remington IC fine for Steel?
Someone at Basspro talked me into the Hevi-shot. I dont know much about waterfoul ammo so that is why I bought it. I will try something cheaper next time I buy some.

If its not meant for steel then IMO you shouldn't shoot steel through it. Depending on how much you shoot you may run into a problem getting your choke out due to swelling. Im sure some guys will argue this, but this has just been my experience.

Arise.Kill.Eat -Acts 10:13 I have read a bunch of stuff on the internet about Star Wars but that does not mean I can skin a deer with a light saber.

But your factory choke may be steel compatible...

With all that being said, the only way to know what choke to shoot is to shoot it on paper. Set up at 40 yds and shoot whatever shell your going to hunt with and try different chokes. You will be surprised at how each choke acts differently. I actually shoot a full because it patterns better. Try it for yourself and you will see what I am talking about.
