I'm training my first pup, when we're throwing the dummy she will sit and stay next to me till I tell her to retrieve. My problem is having her stay and me being able to walk away without her moving. Just wanting some advice, thanks.

You can continue repeating what you are now doing or collar condition her, then use the e-collar to reinforce the command.

How old is she?

Get a lead, you can start off with a shorter one. Have the pup sit. Once sitting tell pup to stay. Begin walking away slowly. As soon as pups butt leaves the ground pop the lead up pulling pups head up and butt back down, and tell pup NO...STAY....repeat until you can move up to a long lead and keep walking further away having pup stay for a little longer each rep.

I would recommend not giving the stay command.

Sit should mean sit until you release the dog.

Give the sit command while you face her and walk away, at first only got 5 or 6 feet, then walk back to her and give her the come or heel command (even if she doesn't know what it means) and walk her a few feet and do the sit command again.

Slowly move away giving the sit command in SMALL increments until you can get some distance.

Then after she is reliable with sitting for extended periods try hiding behind a wall of the house for a second or two.

Extend the amount of time you are hidden slowly.
Before long you can have her sit, and walk around the entire house.

Also after you have her sitting and you are able to walk behind something for 15 or 20 seconds, tie a lead to her and giver her the sit command while you gently tug. IF she gets up, take some quick steps toward her and command sit. Before long she will pull back on you to keep sitting.

Take it slow and keep it fun.

This is I am assuming for a young pup <5 months?

If they are over five months you should consider formalizing the obedience using an ecollar and other forcing techniques.

Find a training system and follow it.

I always teach stay at first then slowly transition into using only sit....to each their own!

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for. She is just a little over 5 months. She is a golden retriever. She Is doing way better than my expectations this far along. I'm using Tom Dokken's retriever training book. Seems pretty helpful

This above quote is the way that we train "sit". We feel that if you are using "stay", this is only a reinforcing command to "Sit". To our dogs, sit means dont move until the next command.

That does make sense, I like that better than using two commands to do the same thing

I should also mention that giving the come command after you walk a distance is not a good idea, it creates anticipation for the dog.

walk back up to her before you say come/heel.

So what would you say instead of come?

Don't say anything but praise and sit (if she begins to break) until u walk back up to ur side. Then give a heel or free command and walk a little bit and do it again.
