Looking for a hunting knife for my 17 yr old son. Wanting something that will last him a long time. Up to 100.00 may go more. I was thinking bout a Buck Omni or Buck Alpha. any other suggestions? Ive had an old timer since I was 12, im 41 now. not a great knife but had a lot of meaning to me till it broke last season. Wanting him to have something well made that will last him. and also a good knife.

bear and son are usa made. most of buck's still are. be hard to go wrong with a good case trapper or sodbuster. sodbuster's are cheap enough to buy him 2. one for everyday rough stuff, and one for hunting only. or a sodbuster for pocket and a good set of forschner butchering knives and a good steel.

Why not get with some of the knife makers on here . They can make you a custom knife that will be something he will always keep and remember his dad by. It will be something he can pass down too. I did it for my son and am glad I did.

I did it for my son and am glad I did. I second this. I bought a knife from MikeC last yr and I am overly impressed. In fact, I dont use it too often bc it is such a nice knife. He was great in working with me on what I wanted and then kept me in the loop during the knife making process I know there are several others on here that make great knives too
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

While I myself have bought a knife from a local maker and it is great. I don't think he is going to do that for anywhere near 100$

I like a smaller knife because an outdoor knife has to do a lot of tasks, skin a deer, camp cooking, maybe a fish. A thin blade is a lot easier to re-sharpen in the field. In any event, for under $100 I think a Buck pathfinder is a real classic. That knife will last a life time. http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=3041

I own a MikeC knife that is beautiful and functional, great knife that I love to use. I also own a couple BushMonkey knives which I also love to use. These are the two knife makers I have experience with on here and I don't have a negative thing to say about either one.

Who are some of the knife makers on here yall have gotten good feedback on I have bought knives from 3 different members on here: Bush Monkey knives, chopsknives, and D Crawford. Each one is a GREAT example of craftsmanship, and a valuable tool for the task I need from each of them. And each one of these members are great guys also! As funds become available, I plan to sample more of the fine knifemakers work from this forum.

I got different knives for each of my sons. I had each of them engraved with something unique to our relationship. It made it very personal to each of them, just a suggestion.

I use an Anza knife for my skinning/hunting knife. Have had mine for 25 years and other than showing its age, it has held up to a lot of use, and still holds a fine edge. Each one will have it's own unique look to them. You should give them a look.

When I was getting my Puma sharpened I looked at this one and was impressed. I know there are a couple of dealers in Texas if you go through Helle's site. http://www.eversharpknives.com/shop/inde...3842bc587b54205
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype
