The first couple of times I went duck/goose hunting I did not wear ear protection. I didn't think anything of it at the time but each day I hunted I had a bad ring in my ears and a headache. I have been shopping around for some ear protection thats comfortable and effective, but I also want to hear game and people talking. I tried the surefire ear plugs that some people like but I couldn't stand how uncomfortable they were. I wore some Allen Company Sound Sensor this year for dove season and they worked great. http://www.amazon.com/Company-Profile-He...+ear+protection I just bought those Howard Light electronic muffs on cyber Monday, got them on sale. Was thinking about trying them out. Haven't been able to duck hunt yet this year but fixing to go soon. Any of y'all use ear protection while duck hunting? If so, what kind do you use?

My Girlfriend is deaf in one ear, so we try to make sure her hearing stays good in her good ear. I bought her a set of the walkers "Alpha Muffs" game ears. She loved them so much I went and bought myself a pair. Anyways they're great, run off a AAA battery, only have to replace batteries once a season, and she goes maybe 20 times a season. Only draw back is they block out the wing beat sound, one of my favorite sounds!

I bought a pair of mid-cost electronic in the ear type. Sport ear or something like that. They had a 30 day money back. I used them 2 hunts and sent them back...the wind noise was impossible for me to deal with. They told me it was something I would get used to but I wasn't going for it.
Needless to say I don't wear any plugs, I want to hear the ducks whether that be wings or them talking. One thing I do know is last time I was checked the lady asked me if I shot right handed because she could see the loss in my left ear.
Don't let your ears hear what your eyes didn't see, and don't let your mouth say what your heart doesn't feel

I've got the expensive, custom-molded inside-the-ear type (like hearing aides) and my son has electronic earmuffs. Buy the best you can afford. You will want your hearing when you get older. I put off the decision longer than I should and, trust me, it is no fun not being able to hear well. Once it gets bad enough the ringing doesn't stop.

So you like those huh? I been using the cheap orange foam plugs for years. I need to get something good, not interested in any type muffs.

the first sentence on the description of these says that its for hunting situations where a low number of shots are fired... Idk if that's what I'd look for to take duck hunting or any migratory bird hunting really

Yeah I didnt wear any protection this season. I just made sure to keep my distance from others. I like to be able to hear other people when they call out where the birds are coming from.
Iv got hogs an can show you a good time.

I've been wearing molded ear plugs my whole life and won't shoot without them. My ears will ring for days if I do. It's too easy to not wear them and I will still be able to hear when I am 70.

Be sure you wear ear protection, tried being the macho man one day and made the stupid decision of not wearing ear protection, my ear hasn't stopped ringing.

I just wear a normal stick in plug in my left ear since I shoot right handed. Your right ear is protected from the sound waves when you're aiming so just a plug in the left works for me!!!
I don't always shoot deer, but when I do, I prefer B&C's.
I don't always shoot ducks, but when I do, I prefer banded ducks.

Don't know how old you are but take the time and expense to get some custom molded (you'll be more likely to wear them) electronic plugs. I have a noticable loss in one ear (my right ear and I'm right handed so ignore the above comment it's BS), I so wish I had taken better care of my ears younger. Suck it up, spend the money and enjoy your later years. Ringing in your ears indidcates permenant damage.

Im 20, right handed, and since teal season my RIGHT ear has been ringing non-stop. I don't notice a difference in my hearing now but im sure I will later on in life. Sucks!

Ok I don't understand the right handed left ear thing. my right ear would hurt after a bit of shooting and my left would be ok so I just put a plug in my right ear. I use the regular plugs. is there a certain plug that would work for hearing people talk? the problem I have with the wrap around ones is my fat head and they are too tight!

If you are right handed your right ear is directly behind the muzzle therefore getting less muzzle blast. That is straight from the lady who molded my competition plugs and tested my ears.

Go to an audiologist and have molds made and it's about a week turnaround. Have hunted in a blind with 4 guys shooting and it cuts out all gunfire noise. I would not recommend them for rifle shooting, but they work great for 3'' duck loads. I used to hate wearing foam earplugs and sometimes forget I have these in. Read some reviews online.

I wear peltor electronic muffs. They block out rifle noise, amplify all other noises, and even have an audio jack so I can plug in my phone and listen to music or anything else (like the proper way to make a duck call) when I start to nod off. As a bonus - keeps my ears warm, too.

Ive been wearing electronics this year for every waterfowl hunt and I must say I am impressed with them. I used to not hunt with any hearing protection but started hearing ringing as well. The ear muffs changed all that.
