I have been out of the bow hunting business for a couple of years because of a rotator cuff tear . It has been repaired and I have gotten my old Mathews down and started shooting again . I am wanting new sights on it and have been considering the single pin sights. How reliable are they? And ( I know it's a STOOPID question) but how exactly do they work. I understand of course how the multiple pins work but not the single pin . Are they just a vertical pin that works on the same principle as the multiple horizontal pins .
Please don't bash my ignorance to much

There are fixed single pins and adjustable single pins. I assume you are talking about the adjustable. They work on the same premise as the multi pin, but you have to manually adjust them for each yardage. There is typically a marker on the adjustment portion. Some adjustable use friction and some have a wing nut or set screw.
They are as reliable as the person that sighted them in
I prefer the multi-pin for hunting and adjustable for 3D. I don't want to have to be messing with my bow in a tree and try to guess what distance a shot will present itself.
Good luck

TXhntr hit it on the head. I personally have a 4 pin sight with 1 of them being a rolling pin. I use my rolling pin for longer shots so I don't need a dozen pins when I realistically use 2-3 95% of the time.

Thanks fellas!! That answers my question. I prefer the multi pin set up as well and will stay with it. I can't imagine try to jack with a pin in a hunting situations
Thanks again

Thanks again Good news is sight mfg's offer combo one now. I use a three pin that can dial your bottom pin to long distances. Or I can just use one pin. CBE Tek hybrid is what I'm using but its a little pricey if your not shooting long range slot. G5 makes a cheaper version with a floating bottom pin

I have a 5pin truglo right now and been great for hunting. If I did It over again I would get a 4 with finer pins.. like said as flat as some bows shoot these days 4 or even 3 pins will let you have more sight picture. if I was shooting 3d tournaments a lot id go with a single

A single pin slider will put you in a freestyle class. It is classified as a moveable sight. These are the guys with long stabilizers, and scopes on their bow, often shooting out to 50 yards. They are pretty amazing.
If you want to shoot bowhunter class, you have to have fixed pins. This is a ton of fun, and really competitive since there are so many great shooters.
I am a huge fan of Spot Hogg sights. I have a Hogg-It on my bow, so does my daughter. Mrs is getting a Hunter for her bow for Christmas. They are tough, never move, and the service is amazing if you ever call. Yes, they are expensive, but well worth it for a product made here in USA.

.257 guy, I shoot an HHA Optimizer Lite Ultra single pin (.010 diameter pin) and I absolutely love it. I never liked the cluttered sight picture with multi-pin sights. The HHA has the calibrated distance tapes and I was able to sight it in in about 5 minutes. When hunting with this sight, I don't ever adjust it. I mostly hunt from a treestand and from the stand to the feeder it is exactly 20 yards. I also always practice at 20, 30 and 40 yards using my 20 yard pin setting only, so if I am hunting in a blind where shots may be at different distances, I know exactly how much to hold over.

I prefer a single pin slider. I hunt from treestands or blinds and most of my shots are in the 20 - 25 yard range. If I was mainly stalking I would shoot a multi-pin sight.
Enjoy the experience and take home the memories!

I'm with MacDaddy21 on this one. I use an HHA Optimizer single pin sight. It allows me to clearly see my target without other pins getting in the way. If you practice enough, you will get good at judging distance.

Yeah I shot 3d in youth then bow hunter.. always wanted to get into open.. our local one stopped doing it a good while ago. You ever shoot the Navasot 3D shoot? I've never done the Navasot shoot. Most of the tournaments I've shot have been around the DFW area of Texas. I shot my first 3D tournament somewhere around 1990 or so. It was a local event, and there wasn't a youth division. I shot local club tournaments through high school, and occasionally through college. I just started up again this past year. This past year, I shot the ASA series in the Bow Novice class (bowhunter class, all known distance). It was a lot of fun, and I may shoot it again this year. http://www.texasasafederation.com/TexasFed.htmlI bought a second bow to set up as a target rig, but haven't gotten all the parts together for it yet. I would like to shoot either K-45 or Open-C (both are known distance classes this year) once I get my new bow all set up.

I'm in the HHA single pin group, I easily shoot out to 30 yds with my pin set at 20 yds. It just takes a little practice to learn what your equipment will do.
