How is the 17hmr for coyotes and smaller game? Is there much pelt damage?
Say coyotes under 150 yards, will it work?

hit them in the head there will not be any pelt damage. Guess question might be, How good a shot are you and why shoot them at 150 yds?

At 100 yards and in, the 22 mag is sweet and does little damage. I have killed a couple yotes with my .17hmr, but I had to track one and the other ran 50 yards or more. The 22 mag in the slates puts them down before 20 yards.
There is a new rim fire round out called the 17 win mag. Savage is the only gun maker to have it so far (Savage B Mag). I have one ordered after shooting a friends. Pretty flat out to 200 yard with only 1 inch of drift at 150 yards with 10 mph wind.
Hope this helps.

Most asked question on hunting forums. A quick google search will net you the last hundred times this was asked on the internet this week.

Looked at the 17wsm as well. Ammo was impossible to find at the online sites I looked at. Don't want to be stuck in the same boat as I am with 22lr.

I use 223/ 5.56 for everything from rabbit to deer. Shot placement is key in both killing them on first shot and total damage done to pelt/ meat. Shoot em in the head!

at 150 yards if there is no wind to push that little fragment of a bullet around and you can hit em in the head then your good. If you have any wind then its a crap shoot. I bought one and was told it would be a crappy round by my dad, that I should have bought a 22 mag. He was right. That little hummer didn't like any wind, it it was calm it would shoot. I bought a 22 mag and got rid of it. If your going to go with a rimfire then get a 22 mag, or just get a 223 and be done
