If you shoot 25 shells in a hunt to get 6 birds you need to spend your time at the 5 stand/sporting clay range and not in a duck blind.
If I shot a box of shells trying to get 6 I'd go home pizzed long before that.
I ain't that good of a shot but if you shoot them when their legs and donkey are pointed down and their heads are pointed up your odds increase significantly. This post was an eye opener. Some days you're a bona-fide headshooter, other days a box isn't enough. It happens. +1 Spend all the time at the range you want. Everyone is going to have "that" day every now and then.

I get what y'all are saying...I've had those days too. Difference between us is instead of burning the heck out of the hole and educating a donkey load of ducks I'm going home pissed. I go out every day with the expectation of getting 3-4 groups of birds to decoy...if they are singles or pairs I might stay longer but otherwise I'm going home aggravated. If I was a better hunter and hunted public then I would burn the crap out of them knowing that someone else would

Ya, I hadn't though about the aspect of burning a hole out. If I had a private honey hole, I probably wouldn't burn flocks all day either.

I'll admit it... I suck. Can't shoot a shotgun half the time. The other day shot a limit in 12 shells including one cripple follow up. The time before that, I found the bottom of my second box when I limited. I was taking a lot of pass shots but still, ouch.
I've honestly thought about getting some one on one lessons. I grew up hunting and shooting and am excellent with a rifle and even better with my bow but I fall to pieces with a shotgun.
To the original question, I take 2 boxes plus whatever loose shells I have leftover from a previous trip...

One - I get them in real close - so can limit out and get back home
I don't always shoot deer, but when I do, I prefer B&C's. I don't always shoot ducks, but when I do, I prefer banded ducks.

In seasons past I have always carried 2 boxes. This year has been a different story, the biggest part I changed to a gun that fits me extremely well and in return I have shot a lot better. Also I started taking shots this year that probably have a better % of killing ducks lol. So this year has been 1 box and some stragglers.

Take 3 boxes to the goose field. Usually a box and leftovers to the duck blind

I own some Brownings, have a VersaMax, shot Benellis and Berettas... The SX3 IMHO blows them away, its like it was built for me. I love it and I shoot significantly better.

More shells = Empty skies
Less shells = Group after Group
Don't believe, give it a shot...

I carry a box and average about 10-12 per 6 birds.
Wouldn't hurt my feelings if they put a shell limit on public grounds. It would go a long way in reducing some of the problems we see.

HMMM... that's a great idea! how many shells would the restriction be? There are a bunch of places already like this across the country. 25 shells is the most common, but many restrict you to 15.

I think that would cut down on the sky blasters dramatically and even if they still do sky blast atleast they'll be out of shells by 7:15 and leave those 9am mallards for me!!!!

From what Ive seen on the refuges this year, that would be the best thing to happen. The limit is 50 right now. It needs to be 25. Call them up and let them know how you feel.

I hunt snow geese, so 100 shells go to the blind with me and another 50-75 in the truck. Have never shot 100, but my hunt have only been average migration days. The week after my last hunt 4 guys shot 173 snows in one day. They said they shot about 350 rounds between them.
