I am not real experienced in muley hunting but I know what a muley doe looks like from a reasonable distance (big ol donkey ears).
Is there any other good way to distinguish them from one another in the heat of the moment?
Also, I know a WT has its "white flag" but usually when you see that you have a different set of problems.
Better safe than sorry. Thanks

Mule deer doe are more grayish in color. A little larger as well I believe. Also, tails are COMPLETELY different. Muley is thin, white with black tip. WT is as everyone knows. Hope that helped

Viewed from behind, Muleys will have a buff-colored circle on their rear. As mentioned, the ears appear disproportionately large, and they have a dark crescent or circle on the forehead. They will often have a grayish muzzle as well. Your mature Muley does will also appear more "blocky" than the WT.

Better safe than sorry. Thanks If your worried about getting the two mixed up on your hunt at Matador coming up, don't worry. You will see the difference right off. This time of year at Matador, the mulies are VERY grey colored and the whitetails are a light brown. You can tell the difference from a long way off. I could tell the difference there when they were just dots in my binoculars. Up close, the mule deer ears look huge compared to a whitetail. Good luck on your hunt! Take a lot of pics. We will be looking for updates!

With tails down, you will see white on the mule deer butt, on wtd, it's all the same color as the body with no white visible.

Should be real easy. MD doe for one are larger. They have the long, wide, floppy ears and they tend to be more grey in color whereas WT does are brown. You might get some hybrids that are hard to distinguish, but a pure MD doe is pretty easy.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Alot of time when mule deer are on the move they will hop on all four. A whitetail will jump but not Hop.

Well, I am a little more experienced at MD hunting now and you're right. You can tell the difference immediately. Don't even have to take a second look.

How did the hunt go? Any pics? My dad and I both got an 8pnt muley. My dad got a nice hog too. Haven't had time for pics yet. I did see where you took that pic with that monster that you shot. I stood at that very spot and remembered your pic. Great place but unfortunately I shot the last deer there.

I'm very glad he was able to make the hunt, and even more that you both scored. Finding the last two deer on the whole WMA must have been hard! Now there's nothing left but hoot owls and polecats.

Thanks, I don't think we covered 10% of the whole compartment while we was there. My dad shot his about 60 yards from the road. After dragging it by myself, I decided that I needed to rethink my game plan. Very rough terrain, as you know, and I needed to stay somewhat close to my dad. I hunted Lone Canyon and it was unique. Hope to go back and see if they have restocked it.

Nice! The one I got was on the western side of North Middle, right on the border of Lone Canyon. Did you set your dad up at the windmill?
