Hey y'all, I have a friend's dad who is getting interested in hunting. My dad let me plain gun prices. Of course, as a beginner, I'm sure he wouldn't want to spend that much, so I told him prices range from $350-$600. I was thinking: Ruger American, Savage axis, Remington 700 combos at BPS, Weatherby Vanguard, and Howa 1500.
Anything else? I'm looking for something that will come with scope.
And/or scope/rifle combos that'll fit a $700 budget
Thanks

In some ways this is a chicken-and-the-egg situation. The best choice is almost certainly a quality used rifle with a few scratches. The problem is that a newb doesn't know enough to distinguish between a quality rifle with a few scratches and a flossy piece of junk, so he buy a new low-end rifle because he thinks the new rifle is a safer buy. What he really needs is a friend to help him cruise the used gun racks and give him a little guidance. In my view, the glass in most packages isn't worth owning.
Also, is your Dad's friend, tall or short, thin or fat? Has he shot for a long time and just never hunted or is he new to shooting? It's really not that complicated, but the rifle must fit, must be of good quality and must have decent glass; he's also got to like it.

It's hard to beat a Weatherby vanguard for an economical hunting gun.

Remington 700 or Tikka. Don't go to big either. People develop real nasty habits on the big magnums. A well placed shot from a 243 will get your further down the road than a very poorly placed shot in a 300WM. I think its funny to see shooters at the range with these 300RUM's etc that cannot shoot them well because they are dodging the recoil.

Just go back and look at your own posts from 1.5 yrs ago. The choices are the same Lol true. See the thing is, I know the market, prices, quality, etc as I've done my research. But,I want real world experiences. So he and his son shot our Vanguards(org). My friend wasn't shooting too great but his dad on my dad's 30-06 hit 4 bullseyes. The last time he shot a gun was a G3 in 1992. Oh and I shot 200yd. I hit to the right by like 4", but that's cuz of the wind. So we went to Academy afterwards. We decided on Tikka T3 lite in .243 with a Zeiss Terra 3-9x42mm. He's not gonna buy yet, after our Hunt next weekend. Thanks for the input y'all

Because you're a lazy youth? Go find it. You know how to spell Tikka, I'm sure you've heard of Bud's gunshop. Use Google.com to find them for prices. Tikkka's cycle smooth, eject with authority, have darn good triggers, and pretty darn good barrels. Look there first.

No such thing as a starter rifle.
There are good quality rifles and poor quality rifles.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Marlin X7 series. Long or short action. This is a great option. I got the 25-06 XL7 and put a $60 scope on it. I have about $350 in the gun and optics and it shot sub MOA right out of the box. It has an accutrigger (technically its called something different)and a good recoil pad.
