Depends on how far southeast. I hunt north of Crowell southeast of Crowell and several places in Knox County.

Foard has been awesome the past 15 years except the last 2 have been pretty tough due to the multiple year drought and die off of deer but this year is looking much better and there's always a chance of 160+
Good luck

I've been hunting sw of Crowell the past 7-8 years. The last 2 years have been awful... The drought was a HUGE factor, but increased hunting pressure has also contributed. Its a great area not only for deer, but also hogs, turkey, ducks, sand hill cranes, geese, dove, etc... Good Luck and maybe I'll see you at Taters Cafe one day.

Pre rut is on near Crowell. We harvested a 5.5-6.5 year old, 200+ lb. buck off our place this last weekend. He was interested in a doe in the area but not chasing hard. A few more day and it will be on.

going to time about right for me....
the drought has been vicious for real.... two years with poor nutrition and low birth weight and low survival rates (20%) and the deer are fewer in number

You can harvest some very big deer potentially; however, I wouldn't recommend a smaller lease unless you hunt by yourself and would not recommend a lease that had more than 1 hunter per section. Deer densities are relatively low compared to other parts of the state and the drought can and has played a major impact in this part of the state. The rut gets kicked off real good the week before, during and after Thanksgiving...always has and I suspect always will.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Great point tShawnB. This year Thanksgiving falls the latest date it can kinda messing up our "normal" days by three or four which is important if you want to hit peak rut.

Here is the 220 lb old buck I took last weekend. His teeth were worn to the nubs. Possibly 6.5, definitely 5.5 250 yard shot, he came to rest at 278.

I think he was always a basket buck. Shows you what a little age can do to an unimpressive rack. Although you would probably want them out of your herd much sooner, we never saw this deer on camera or in the wild.

He'll yea! I am very proud of the deer and the shot I made. Sorry if my post sounded otherwise. I was saying good age on a deer can produce excellent bucks even if genetics isn't the greatest.
