my spike from the lake cooper antlerless/spike hunt....one of four deer taken on that hunt Wouldn't call that a spike, but a three point. A “spike buck deer” is a buck with no antler having more than one point. Just to let those out there that this buck is not a legal buck in any county during the Special Late General Season which is for antlerless and spike bucks only.

Actually, according to TPWD, a spike is any deer having one unbranched antler. Can have 4 points on one side, and 1 on the other.

you are correct sir ! one un-branched antler, the other side could have 20 points....and its still classified a spike....so make sure you take a minute to actually READ the rules and regs. book......

A “spike buck deer” is a buck with no antler having more than one point. Just to let those out there that this buck is not a legal buck in any county during the Special Late General Season which is for antlerless and spike bucks only. First of all, congrats to the hunter on his deer. What an outstanding public lands deer. Kyotee is correct on what he is saying. I think a lot of people get a spike buck confused with a "legal" buck in counties with antler restrictions. Why you may take an buck with one unbranched antler in an AR county, it would not be legal to take in the Special Late General Season that is specifically for antlerless and spikes. Here is the TPWD definition of a spike: A "buck deer" is a deer with a hardened antler protruding through the skin. A "spike buck deer" is a buck with no antler having more than one point. All other deer are antlerless deer. A spike buck must be tagged with a buck deer tag from the hunter's hunting license or applicable permit. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/outdoor-annual/2013-2014/animals/white-tailed-deer

I believe Kyotee1 actually works for TPWD, and judging from his posts is very familiar with the rules and regs.

i stand corrected ! and i love it .... that is the actual letter of the law, looked it up myself as well, though the good people that ran the hunt, local AUTHORIZED GAME BIOLOGIST, ? , that work through, or ,for, the state, told us all that ,( ONE )UNBRANCHED ANTLER would be a legal buck, and would be (CLASSIFIED ) as a spike. and we could take em out . so,standing here with foot in mouth....lol...let me mumble a SORRY KYOTEE1,YOU IS RIGHT ON SPOT ! big difference between a true SPIKE versus a CLASSIFIED AS A SPIKE deer. ( looks like i better just stick to being a fishin guide that hunts, and not a lawyer ! i am mutch better at that ! ) lol....

We actually had a buck posted on the forum a while back that was not 13 inches wide and had two branched antlers, only it also had a third unbranched "hardened antler protruding through the skin" that was separated from the two branched antlers by just enough skin and hair to be accepted by TPWD to be a legal buck.
