Love to hear them rip in. They come to our pond first in the morning and we pass on them and let them serve as decoys. The widgeon and pintails are usually right behind them.

They are cool coming in and they are pretty ducks. I eat them all the time, and this year they seem to be especially not fishy. I wont roast them whole or eat the skin. As jalapeno ducks they are fine.

Ringnecks eat a vegetative diet. Nothing wrong with them, hunters down south are just weird about them, for some reason. Brine just about any duck and cook them right and its hard to find any that wont eat well.

one of the great tests to cooking...Just salt and pepper, nothing else, and grill over wood....Do the same with a Mallard...I GUARANTEE you will spit that ringer out and eat the mallard!!!Any one can disguise what it really tastes like!!

Cooking: you're doing it wrong. I never knew that clandestine food prep was a thing. Kinda a broad statement IMO. If they're both on the mollusks, I GUARANTEE you will not know the difference.

You can always count on a ringer to be the first to die. They seem to show up early. Actually pretty tough to kill, I perfer to pass every one need a good live decoy in their spread

I always have been a duck relativist. If blackjacks are all that wanna work that day, blackjacks it is. But if I have puddlers flying well I'll pass on them.

I have had several folks tell me that a ring neck is one step up from a coot
is that true?
I still eat them and thing the drakes are pretty but want to know the general consensus.
seem like a redhead with black instead of red on them Coots are actually good eating...

I'll boil it all down to this, if you believe in the concept "trash duck", in any way, shape, or form, then ringnecks definitively fit into the category.
If you don't, then they are all the same. I've killed a bunch, eaten most of em, but it's usually dire straights before I'll splash one, and he's gotta buzz the decoys a few times for me to mull it over.

I don't like calling them trash ducks myself, I have more respect for them than that. I just don't like cleaning them and cooking them, so I don't shoot them, unless someone else wants them I will gladly shoot them. But I get just as much pleasure watching them work and talking pictures of them, I do not need to kill them to enjoy them. But that is just me.
