I have had several folks tell me that a ring neck is one step up from a coot

is that true?

I still eat them and thing the drakes are pretty but want to know the general consensus.

seem like a redhead with black instead of red on them

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

They are probably the coolest duck to watch come into your decoys, can turn a slow hunt into an awesome one, and taste fine if prepared right.

But, they are the most difficult duck to clean and that is the only reason they usually get a pass from me.

Yup. And they do make for a fun shoot.

As mentioned, they are a lil tougher to clean.....can't tell you about the taste, as I give them to people who want ducks

You can always count on a ringer to be the first to die. They seem to show up early.

I just take a knife and cut the breast out then cut the skin off done and done

Guys, easiest way to clean them is to cut the breast off with the feathers still on then fillet the skin and feathers off them just like filleting a fish. All it takes is a halfass sharp knife (which any self-respecting man of the outdoors should have on him at all times anyways).

Or pony up and use your man muscles to tear into it like the ultimate predator you are...

I cleaned 2 limits of them few years ago, when I finished I went in side to eat dinner and my wife made me leave the table I stank so bad. I could feel ringer stank all around me there was no escape from it, it was a thick stank, like a cloud all around me, reminded me of this guy..

Yeah they are. Here is a little 8 second video me and my son shooting a pair few years ago, you can hear my son getting all excited, they circle from the back you can see them then come around over the camera I had off about 40 yards away. I smoked the first, my son shot the second one..

If I have a new hunter I hope to see ringnecks, I usually pass but they sound so cool screaming in that they have made some so-so shoots into a memorable event.

Same here. Once they're bacon wrapped, I can't tell the difference.

Yes they are considered trash right below the beloved spooney, some will disagree between the two but both are bottom of the barrel.
