I get to pick it. Thinking either the 12ga Mossberg 500, 535 or 835. possibly a rem 870. been seeing a lot about jamming with the newer 870s though. figuring shell spend around 300-350 maybe. What would yall suggest? Hes 17 and been shooting a Winchester 20ga and wanting a 12

I am not a fan of the Mossberg 500. Bought one and had nothing but problems. The new 870's I have also been afraid to take the plunge on because the quality has gone down hill.
Personally, I really like the Browning BPS, Winchester Shadow X Pump, and the Weatherby. I think only the BPS is in the 500's, everything else is within your price range.
I have not fired or used the Benelli Nova but I have heard great things.
I had 1 choice for a pump in that range, I would chose the Winchester SxP.

Win SXP. Or that Win 1300 in the first comment. I have both guns and both function without flaw.
A man can never have enough guns.

The Stoegger 2500 is extremely nice its a 12ga automatic. Ive had one for a year and no issues. Its manufactured by benelli. all the internals are warranted through benelli as well. i paid $520 for mine
The Truth is....I'm always saddened when I kill an animal. It's not remorse I feel, I know why I'm a hunter. It's out of respect.

I would suggest that if the ex is buying a gun, you try not to tick her off again.
Other than that, what does the 17 year old want? If the gun is for him, he should pick it out, shoulder it, make sure it fits, etc. Maybe he would like a semiauto over a pump? Did anyone ask him?

cypher,, he said he was joking when he told her he wanted a shotgun actually. (already has one though a 20ga 24" that he likes, heck I like it) I kinda let her know but shes determined now. so, me having covered the base of letting her know what he told me and him not minding, US,, getting another gun I don't see any other option other than help point her in the right direction

Personally, I really like the Browning BPS, I concur My vote would be for a used ithaca Model 37. Love these things, and love older guns. So much mojo.
