I witnessed a good mature buck get shot on the property beside where I hunt...First let me tell the storey...I did not see a single deer all morning and was getting ready to leave, as soon as I stood up I saw a big buck walking down the fence line...He was on the other side to the fence...Of course, I thought about shooting him, but them I made the right decision and passed because he was not on my property even though he was less than a foot from the fence line...About 5 minutes later, a heard a shot and down went the deer...I hunt small tract of land with farm land surrounding and had NO idea anyone was hunting next door...Never seen them out in 3 years I have been hunting...Of course I was upset the big deer (not many in our area that big) was gone but that is hunting and that is the way it goes...I went in for the day...
This is where it gets interesting...I came back out around 3:00 and saw about ten bussards just on the other side of my fence line...Looked over and there laid the deer with rack cut off, the hind quarters gone, and I think the back strap cut out...The deer was not even gutted and a lot of meet was left...Is this against the law...I doubt they even used a Buck tag as we are in a one buck county...I was sick that all that meat was wasted...I am new to hunting and not sure but thought by law all edible portions of the animal MUST be harvested...I took pictures as well...
Also, with him leaving the remains by my fence line, and on the game trail that lead to my property, will this cause deer not to come in to my property and head another way...Just curious if this the remains were possibly left there on purpose to keep them from coming in to my property...
I may be jumping the gun here, but it did not seam right...
Thanks in advance for any feedback...

A deer can't be cut up beyond quarters before it reaches its final destination. Make the call. It may be tough to prove anything on this deer, but maybe the area will be watched for a while. Good luck!

I am pretty sure that the skull needs to intact with the horns, then when it arrives to its final destination(e.g processor) then they can be cut off. What a sorry excuse for a neighbor/hunter. Sorry to hear about that!

I'd call the g.w. there may be more involved in this story than you know and there may be a history of this action to this point.

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/pp1/scottrollins/DeerMeat.jpgLike I said, I am somewhat new to this, so I wanted to post the picture...Looks like a lot of wasted meat as this is whats left of the middle of the deer...Let me know your thoughts... Also, do you think where he left the remains will affect my deer traffic...

both rear quarters still attached. Sad. Also thats a fat deer

With the skin pulled down I can't tell - are all four quarters gone? If so, and backstrap is gone, may be a different result. You can discard the ribcage. Please don't take this as defending anyone, just a question.

Re-look at the carcass and compare where the legs are to where the guts are coming out.
That is a fairly typical poachers method, Head or skull cap with antlers, backstraps, tender loins and hams.
This is one where the GW needs to be called in.
One because it was possible a case of poaching, Two, because it is a definite waste of game meat.

What county did this happen in ? looks like someone shot a deer in the lungs and was heading to our pond when it laid to rest, 20 yards from my feeder. looks like it had been there for a week. coyotes have had there way with it,and it sure did stink. I didn't see anything near that feeder and there had been several deer hitting it before. I went to the feeder to see if the deer and hogs have been cleaning it out like they have in the past, and they had, but it sure smelt bad. So i looked around till i found the smell.

Definitely, and keep us informed. Those suckers need to be caught and put in jail...
But when they are, the headlines will read "Hunters Caught blah blah blah" not "Criminals Caught...

that sure looks like a poached deer you might call the game warden and then contact the landowner after the evidence has been viewed and documented by the authoirities.
