HWY_MAN doesn't expect anything out of the veteran hunts he puts together except the satisfaction of the guys he hosts....BUT HE DESERVES IT. There aren't any guest speakers, sponsors or catered meals....what he does is takes vets hunting. Plain and simple. It's not a luxurious job and there is a lot of pressure involved in getting a disabled combat veteran on a deer....up by 0500, hunt until 1000, breakfast at 1100, home by noon, back out to corn at 1400 and hunt until after dark. 3 sections is not a huge spread to some but it meant the world to Eddy, Ace and myself - it's what he has, and he offers the whole lot. Not many guys give free range and free choice on any buck or deer they see - Mike does (and he has some really good deer).
Mike met Eddy on Saturday morning but were already linked before they shook hands and well-acquainted before they crossed the cattle guard going into the ranch that morning. Be it a "Buck Sergeant" lobbing artillery rounds in Vietnam or a seasoned Corporal leading raids in Iraq - these two men shared a bond; a bond which few understand and even fewer appreciate......oh yeah, they were also hunting. By the end of the weekend, Mike was upset with himself that Eddy didn't get a deer but Eddy was more than thankful that he was given an opportunity to hunt. As we parted ways, Mike told Eddy, "You're welcome anytime". I thought it was more than a gesture. Perhaps it was respect and appreciation for sacrifices in the line of duty, maybe because he wanted to get Eddy a deer......we'll see some day.
Mike has hosted several hunts over the years to friends, kiddos, complete strangers but most often veterans. This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to be a part of it.
My hat is off to you, Mike.

Great job Hwy Man. It's a shame that other people can't understand what these veterans go through. I'm glad u can give them a break from the norm.

Class act. I like the way he rolls, understated with no need for public appreciation. Doing the right thing, the right way.
