I went to the Black Hills of South Dakota on my first whitetail bow hunt.

It was COLD. Nine degrees in the morning warming up to a high of a whopping 32 degrees. Texas is looking better and better.

Anyway this guy was skirting me at 60 yards. Never hunted whitetail before but I do duck hunt so I tried to call him. Used my grunt call and got his attention. He came into the left and was going to circle me. When he crossed my shooting lane he was going to be at 40 yards.

As he walked across the opening I made a bleat with my mouth and he stopped. Settled the pins and believe it or not they were steady. I let the arrow fly and hit him right where I was aiming. He went about 40 yards and fell over. He laid there bedded and expired in about 5-10 minutes.

Lesson learned. Even if you hit them where you want them. Let them lay awhile or you'll just push 'em.

Shooting Mathews Chill set at 59 lbs. Arrow was Maxima Red. and used Ulmer Edge Broadhead.

He's not huge but he is my first. Nice little eight point with some good mass.

Thanks for letting me tell my story. I am super excited.
Bow hunting is awesome. Learned more about deer in two days of bow-hunting than 5 years of rifle hunting.

Congrats! It is addictive but I find once rifle season comes around I'm pretty tired and welcome sitting at distance.
