I hear many on here talk about the load data being antiquated for this cartridge. Where can I find load data for a modern firearm? How fast should a modern rifle shoot a 140 grain bullet? 100 grain?

Thanks

Mel

My .260 Rem pushes a 140 gr at 2800 fps with zero pressure signs. You should exceed that MV with no problems.

Haven't shot any 100 or 140 grainers out of mine. Get a touch over 3000 with the 120 Ballistic Tip using either IMR 4350 or Reloader 22.

US made Factory ammo will almost all be in 140gr'ers and downloaded to accomodate the older '94, '96 & Model 38 low pressure capable mil surp Mausers.

To capture the full capability of a modern mfg'ed 6.5x55 you'll need to hand load, or buy Norma, RWS etc & some other premium brands of euro mfg'ed ammo. Even the euro "promo" brands like S&B and Privi will be loaded to the 42,000 CUP operating range for the older pre WWII & WWI era gun.

In a Tikka T3 6.5 Swede right out of the box, I used a Sierra book load in RL19 under a Sierra 120gr Pro Hunter that was estimated at 2900fps in the manual and performed abouit like it with the drops at range I was getting. Usually a DRT WTail shooter when I put the soft SPH where it was s'posed to go...and on paper was the easiest rifle for load development I ever had with boringly common dime sized groups right out of the Sierra manual. I'd buy another one just like it if I could.

OBTW Find a One Book / One Caliber little spiral bound book @ under $10. The info is a little dated but will give you lots of choices from every powder & bullet mfg'er to play with as a starting point....and Lapua Brass IS worth the difference in price ...and better IMO than Norma.

What do you want to shoot with it? For games animals in Texas look in the 120-130 gr range.

With 85gr Sierra Varmint bullets and BLC2 near max loads I got avg 3334 fps out of my CZ-550 1 MOA

With 120gr Amax bullets and H414 near max loads I got .5 MOA at 2831 fps

My CZ 550 with its slower 1:8.6 twist rate likes lighter bullets.

All the above is excellent advice, close to my own experiences. Have a pet load that uses RL19 with a 140gr Speer Spitzer, CCI 200s, Norma cases. Unknown what FPS that put out - worked that load up long before I ever got a chrono. May need to load up and do a test sometime. A couple of caveats apply - when trying to load for old military boomsticks from any given nation, keep in mind they tended to use fairly heavy bullets and the rifling in the barrels will be made accordingly, so I've had accuracy issues with using lighter bullets in some of the old warhorses. They just won't shoot with anything under 140. Have also found that with the old Swedish Mausers the chambers on some have turned up, shall we say, a bit "oval", which made resizing the brass a little more interesting than desired.
