OK Folks, after all the back and forth about which lever gun and whether new or used, finding the hornandy 30-30 ammo, yadda yadda... I (SWMBO) decided I am getting a BLR for Christmas... At the moment, I have a like new condition used in .308 with a nice scope on a local auction. If I don't get it, I'll be getting a new one. ??? is, I already have a mauser in 30.06 that I am real happy with, so should I get the BLR in 30.06 and keep one ammunition? Or, is the .308 soooo much better of a choice? This'll be the last gun I buy (unless maybe a small caliber sometime).... shots well inside 300 yards (<150 the norm)pigs and roe deer... pushin 50 years and not getting younger. Stick to the .06 or is .308 gonna make me happier down the road?
Whatcha think?

In a lever action, the 308 definitely makes more sense to me.

Can't think of one reason why it would, 06 out performs it all the way around.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

As the BLR uses a removable magazine I would choose 30-06. That would mean keeping only one caliber ammo around and you have a much wider bullet choice with 30-06 especially if you reload. Also, you should be able to find 30-06 ammo in any out of the way store just about anywhere in the free world.

Having two rifles of the same caliber might be advantageous during a shortage...or it might not. All your eggs would be in one basket. BUT, I believe that .308 was among the first cartridges to be hoarded, along with .223 and 9mm. But who knows how things will go in the next hour, even?

Thanks!! If the .308 doesn't get out of hand, I'll buy it... If it gets much more than new, I'll skip it and buy a new .06... Will save being put in a bad situation down the road (mixing ammo up and not realizing it til away from home)....

When using the above mentioned calibers to pierce holes in a deer or a hogs lungs and or heart there is relatively little if any noticable difference!

I'm still trying to come to grips with his statement, that this may be the last firearm he buys!
That is just pure crazy talk!

The longer action of the 30-06 changes the handling dynamics of the rifle. The BLR just handles better in a short action IMHO.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Woohoo!! The debate is on!!!
Close your eyes and pick one. For the rifle you are looking at and it's intended purpose you'll be fine either way. Nice rifle choice, btw.
My personal preference would be the '06. .270 Win. would be an awesome choice for that particular rifle as well.
Just my two cents.

I like the .308 because of the short action in a lever gun. I have a Savage 99 in .308 and it's a pleasure to carry and hunt with.

That is just pure crazy talk! Not so easy to just go out shooting here (my ears ring bad enough as it is anyway)... And I don't want to have to keep track of a bunch of guns.. And they are more expensive here for the most part. Just locked up in a safe anyway...

I'm reserving my comments until this thread is at least ten pages long, but I will say that the .358 caliber options actually make the most sense in a BLR. Discuss amongst yourselves.

It is nice to have one caliber, both great choices though.

The longer action of the 30-06 changes the handling dynamics of the rifle. The BLR just handles better in a short action IMHO. Agree. And on small game like Roe Deer you can easily go down to a 110 grain bullet in the .308. 30-06 is hard to make perform on anything less than 150gr.

Already having a 30-06 I think I would opt for something different. .358 Winchester or .338 Federal in a short action levergun that is pointy bullet friendly sounds like a too much fun in the woods. Or maybe swing the other way with a 7mm-08, .260, .243. I hope I never buy a gun that I think will be my last.

The short action BLR due to the weight and handling.

BUT, I believe that .308 was among the first cartridges to be hoarded... .308 IMHO is still being hoarded. It's tough to get, .223 has gotten way easier in the past couple of months. Charlie

This post reads like this... Should I piss on my feet? Or should I piss in my boots and put them on? If you already have a 30-06 then get the 308. The performance in close enough 99% of people out there shooting stuff would never know the difference. The 308 is a real killer with 165gr loads as is the 30-06. The advantage would be in the heavier bullets but most people do not venture there. There is the other option! BUY BOTH
