Thinking of getting the n750 for hogs on a buddies lease, 100yds from the feeder. I've shot a phantom gen 3 and loved it. With an ir illuminator how should I expect the resolution to differ?

With the right IR illuminator for the n750 the resolution will differ dramatically, you will want to choose an IR illuminator in the 850nm light wavelength.

So when looking through it, how much more foggy is the n750 compared to the phantom at 75. It's hard to tell from the recordings to my small phone screen.

First off, and I am not being curt I am just stating my opinion - you are comparing apples to oranges.

Gen 3 is the king of NV technology

Digital is the equivalent of Gen 1/2 given the circumstances.

So when you debate resolution between the two you have to factor that in the Gen 3 you are viewing the image through an ocular lens focused on the Phosphor screen. With Digital you are viewing a video display screen that has a "resolution" all of its own outside of the CCD camera resolution.

Anyways to try and answer your question -

If you don't use any IR at all in quarter moonlight or less - Gen 3 all day for being able to render an image and clarity of said image.

If you intend to use IR all the time, regardless of moon phase, then to 75 yards I would say it is a tie because digital can actually withstand ALOT of IR saturation and with the n750 you can control the brightness and contrast of that video screen to tune the image along with a focus feature.

In full moon light with no IR, Gen 3 all day for clarity.

Bottomline you are going to kill any animal deader than dead with either scope at 75 yards so why not save two thousand dollars and just go the n750 route???

I like the TNVC Torch Pro IR light, it is able to focus the beam(spot or wide) which helps with the resolution.

You didn't mention what type of hunting terrain your buddy's lease has, so if it is heavily wooded (East Texas or CrossTimbers area) then stay away from Digital as the IR reflection will be a big issue with target acquisition.

It isn't just an issue with digital. It happens with regular NV as well. Heck, it can be a problem with a regular flashlight on a daylight scoped rifle or iron sights.

Close objects that are over-illuminated will wash out things behind them.

Regardless of how good Gen III is supposed to be, you won't be able to see a dark pig in dark shadows very well or maybe not at all, especially out in the distance. You won't be able to see squat on a dark night under the canopy of the woods. So...

You are going to need a light regardless of the NV gear you get. Getting quality first is much better than doing like a lot of us who own 6-12 IR lights where we keep trying out units to see what works.

You can go the cheaper route for the Torch Pro and buy the $200 head and just mount it on any P6 1" body (which is what I did) and then use a scope ring to mount it to your picatinny rail.

Of course many scopes come with their own lights, but they are nothing compared to the likes of the Torch Pro

So I've pretty much got my mind set on the n750, and I've got around 100$ more to spend after I buy the scope, any point in buying an ir now, or should I wait and get the torch pro?

The n750 is recoil rated to at least a .223 right?

You could go with 45-70, bu the batteries don't like it after a while.

There are some folks who home build IR lights, with that extra 100 bucks I would slap up a classified WTB (want to buy) ad for an 850nm IR light with adjustable power phase capability.

Someone is bound to be in the know and get you squared away.

The n750 is rated for 308 recoil and even a smidge higher.

Personally, I have not been all that impressed by Gen III when it comes to value for the money. The 750 will do the job all day long for half the money and....and...and.....you can use it during the day....

Using it during the day was my selling point. I have the older N550 and have had it a year now. I am very happy with it. I hated taking 2 rifles to the property each weekend. Now I just take my one. I shot a 10 point an hour before dark with it two weeks ago. I hit the blind about 2pm and hunt deer until dark and if I get no deer, I hunt hogs until light and then deer again until about 9:30am. I catch some naps during the night but it sure makes it nice using the same gun for both. I had a lot of experience with Gen 3 in the military and for my purposes, the Gen 3 would be no better for me. Now one day I will go thermal but that is a ways away. I think you will be super happy with the 750.

Dang Greg, if I spent that much time in the blind my back would kill me. What kind of hunting chair or blind are youi in.

I agree with your strategy for using digital, it is quite versatile.

Most I spent without stepping out was 19 hours. I only spend a few hours in the chair during light. My blind is a comfortable 7 X 7 I built so I can lay down and stretch out. I have to say I do it the lazy way. I use a motion detector by the feeder with a unit in my blind with dim LEDs. Once it gets dark, I hang the chair up, pull out the sleeping bag, and crawl in. I have my phone on vibrate and set it to wake me up every 30 minutes. I wake up, watch the LEDs for about 2 minutes and if no action, I pass back out for another 30. If it is lit up, I take a look through the scope to see what it is. If it is a hog, I shoot it and only then does the night suck because I have to get up and clean it.... Just kidding but at 3am, I really don't want to get out of the warm bag....

I sat out all night last week when it was cold. I shot a pig at about 5:55 am. I hated the wait, but it was nice to do the cleaning in daylight.

I have a system similar to yours Greg that I have not deployed yep. I added headphones with a tone so it can wake me up. Worked on a vibrating pager for it for a nit. May revisit that when time allows.
