Headed up in a few hours, haven't been since mid October. What's the rut action looking like in the piney woods?

Tres, I've hunted every weekend near Kennard since opeing day. the first two weekends were crazy with bucks chasing does. Last weekend, it was too hot for much movement. Hopefully the cold weather will get things moving for us!

I think the bulk of the activity is over, but the cold usually gets the bucks active on their scrapes again.

My assessment almost exactly. I know the rut is specific in its timing and winding down, but cold weather has always been the key factor for deer movement (no matter the reason for the movement) from mid-October till Thanksgiving on my east TX place near Kennard.

I am in Cherokee County and I have been seeing bucks chasing the last couple of days. I have hunted pretty much daily since mid-October, and have seen more chasing action this week than I have so far.

My family place is in Nacogdoches county and my brother reports the same. My place in Houston county has without fail been about a week ahead of his for the rut so I am seeing a gradual slowdown after a week and a half or so of intense rutting activity.

I think y'all being just a little further north of me explains this timing difference.

I watched a stud whoop up on the backyard buck last night around 10:30. No does within 200yds, new buck just picked him off the protein feeder and beat him down.

Last weekend was horrific on Sam Rayburn bang we saw a ton of mosquitos, but that was about all the action we had frown hoping to get up there next week and put my wife on one up wish I could this week, but family thanksgiving is getting in the way, but with the rut hot and heavy right now at the house, it may be a blessing in disguise up

FYI...you'll find more deer in the woods than you will on the lake.grin

Been seeing some decent deer Matt. Good luck my friend. We typically have good hunts around Thanksgiving. I will say last weekend was pretty slow.

Just the way I like it boys. Actually, the fact that it even has a name means it's too urban for a cracka like me. grin
