Was hunting "Lake X" this past Saturday and had some guys drive in on 4 wheelers and set up within 80-90 yards from our spread. Kind of pissed me off because there is plenty of other shore line to set up on, but they chose right beside us instead. I refrained from saying anything to them, but had a hard time doing so. So what do you guys consider too close?

to close is them using your spread as part of there landing strip and just place decoys on the other side . which happened to me this last weekend. Only reason I didnt say anything was becuase they were in a horrrrible spot and I knew no ducks were going to come to them.

If you can tell if its a man or woman, they're too close

For safety and fun purposes, 400 yards is a good distance

If you don't get up to talk to them, they won't know they are too close.

I like it when the closest person hunting is far enough away that I can barely hear their shotguns in the distance.

Unfortunately that's part of hunting public. I found some guys checking out my blind the other morning and simply asked if they moved because I had built the blind and was hunting it the past 4 days. They were upset but moved about 200 yards away. At first it kinda upset me because all the birds I had been shooting had to go by their blind first. It ended up working better for me as I shot birds all morning while they sat back and watched.

Talking to someone nicely about it at first may be the easiest solution, if they refuse to move, then it's pretty stupid on their part because not only could they ruin your hunt, but they'd ruin yours as well. Thats why I've never understood the guys that knowingly set up on top of you. It makes it just as worthless for them to be out there

I'm confused reading this...you built a blind, they beat you to a spot that was producing, you asked them to move, and they did?

Nah, they were just checking out his piece of public land, and he asked them if they could find another spot, because that's his public land.

I sure did. I asked nicely. If they had said no then I would've moved. There's nothing wrong with having a talk with somebody explaining that. Happened to me plenty of times last season. I asked, they said no, and I moved. It's times like this that simply asking pays off

The second paragraph was more pertaining to people that don't setup in your blind, but right next to you after you're already setup

Its gonna happen when you hunt public, You can ask them to move or you can move yourself, or stay and both parties will likely have a bad hunt. Duck Hunting is an extremely easy way to make enemy's when people don't follow proper ethics! Problem is, ethics are an opinion, and your and my definition of ethics can differ greatly. Sorry about the bad luck!

You cannot build a blind on public as a means to reserve that spot for yourself all season. It is not your private property. Common sense, but I guess some need reminding.

My comments:

* In regard to saying something, if they are so close that you can talk to them, then for sure say something. You are doing them and everyone a favor by doing so. They will probably say "It is public dude, I can hunt where I want." But maybe, just maybe, they will get it later.

* How far is too close? That depends on the area, and the hunters. You have someone that wants to blow a kazoo all morning and skybust, 400 yards is needed. 150 yards for a group with etiquette.

Thanks for the comments guys. If this happens again, I will politely let them know they are a little too close for comfort.

I didn't build the blind to reserve the spot for myself. It's a temp blind that I left because I was hunting everyday that week. Like I said, if he had said no, I would've moved no problem. It never hurts to ask. If I didn't have 4 guys with me I would've asked them to join me. I don't argue with people over spots on the coast. It's not worth it. I usually use layouts but there's so much flooded water that it makes it tough to stay dry
