Find the trees that are dropping acorns and that have fresh tracks around them. The further away from the road the better. Ones that are bordering a creek are the best. Sit up against a tree with a left to right or right to left cross wind. IF the winds blowing right to left the deer will be coming from your left and vise versa. Good luck. up

I live 10 min. From caddo grasslands, grew up here. I do not hunt there ecxept spring turkey. It is just too crowded. However if you bow hunt, should try lake fannin, thet made it bow only. There is good numbers of deer on bois d arc, but the pressure pushes them over on private land. Someone usually takes a pretty decent deer every year out of there (140+). There are some units that dont see alot of traffic, but i dont really know gate numbers. I just know over there by whats his names place, lol. If interested I can figure out the gate numbers for someone and try to help.

Nice deal. Just a little out of my price range. I think if I hunt down in Landonia Unit I could get reception due to as I left unit 19 and started heading south about the time I got to Bonham I started to get signal. That might be what I have to do for a while till I can get some people to go with me.

Man that would be a great deal of help. I don't even mind if the deer is just a little guy as long as he is legal. LOL I have a map of the whole area and Units. I live in Denton County and it takes me a bit to get up there to hunt but I think its well worth it if I can Harvest me some meat.

There is a gate on CR 2280 that is not to high traffic and also Cr 2295, the turkey hunting used to be good, we would take two toms, opening morning every year, but turkeys have gotten call shy, due to hunting pressure and I believe numbers are down.

You can hunt with rifle at Ladonia, if you can ever find anything to shoot at. Or at least you could in the past...I haven't looked it up in this year's book, to tell the truth.

Thank you both for answering all my questions. I will be going back to scout out some of the lower units in the weeks to come. Hoping to see some kind of signs of life out there besides pigs.

I have three kids but they'll be at school. I do have to get them on the bus before I can go. Wife will be getting home after I leave wondering when I'll get back.

Good luck on going Friday. A front is coming in with temps starting in the 50's dropping to 40, high winds and rain. If it rains watch out where you park. The red clay up there gets pretty slick.

Thanks. I'll either be in a CRX or Pilot which is 4wd but with that advice I'll lean towards the pilot.

I know one road in Ladonia that it doesn't matter what you drive if it's rained within a week you better have a wrecker with you. It's red clay and real sticky. I even got my 4 wheeler stuck there. Within about 20 yards the tires were twice their normal size because of the mud stuck on them. I couldn't sling it off. Had to scrape it off with a shovel. I live real close to there so I know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to offer you some advice. Just be careful.

What 4 wheel drive does is it get you more stuck than a 2 wheel drive does.

I bet I know the road you're talking about, because I almost got my 4WD Chevy Silverado stuck there once. Is it CR3345? I was trying to make my way down to the Sulphur River to check out the hunting there, and it had recently rained.

I was by myself, and out of cell phone range, and I was able to back out of it before I got myself truly stuck. I don't have a winch and at the time didn't carry a shovel in my truck like I do now.

Incidentally, that's the thing that prompted me to buy one of those "Spot" GPS messenger gizmos. If I had gotten stuck, I would have had to have left my truck and hiked quite a ways to get back into cell phone range to call my wife, or else ask a stranger to call her for me.

Also, the ONLY time I have ever seen deer at Ladonia was two years ago during bow season, and it was some does and one immature buck that wouldn't have made antler restrictions. I saw them around the check-in station off of CR3395. I believe the landowners to the west had feeders going, which were keeping the deer in the area.

By the time rifle season rolled around that year, the deer had disappeared, and I hunted out there a couple of times last year and didn't even see any signs like tracks or droppings.

That's one of the bad roads. There are several others. I've been all over that entire area. I do not go there if it's raining or if it has rained. There are a lot of hogs down by the river if you want to walk a long way(about a mile) through thigh high grass. I'm not trying to scare anybody away I just want you to be prepared and know what to expect.
