How long can I safely leave a deer head in the freezer before taking it to the taxi? It's currently triple bagged in the freezer

Awhile. Taxidermists have mounted animals that were kept frozen for decades. At some point, it will freezer burn, and that makes it more difficult, but still doable. A year or less, and it should be fine. Over that, freezer burn, may become a minor issue.

caped out and rolled up moist and bagged properly I have seen hides be used that were 2-3 years old and no freezer burn but if its the head and all together I wouldnt wait more than 10-12 months top.

It doesn't matter how long you keep it. There are tricks to make working with freezer burn easier to deal with. Got one last year that was in freezer for 6 years. Ears and nose where burned but I was able to get tanned and mounted without a problem.

it all depends on how properly it was wrapped up. It you stuck the whole head in the freezer, even though triple bagged, air will get to the ears, forehead, eyes and nose and cause freezer burn. Those are the areas that freezer burn the first. I had one come in just the other day that was like that in the freezer since 2010. It was dried like jerky and there was no way to do anything with it. It could not even be skinned it was so dry and glued on to the head. Yes there are tricks to skin a freezer burn skin but it takes time and adds to the costs. A completely skinned and airtight wrapped skin can stay in the freezer for years without freezer burn.

So it's best to go ahead and have it completely skinned off the skull before freezing or can I get away with leaving it on the head for a few months?

I plan on only waiting a few months. Long enough to get all the meat processed then I will worry about the shoulder mount. So I am guessing a few months wont be a big deal?

No guys, a few months is nothing to worry about. Just bag them good and freeze.

Lol, hopefully 2 or 3 years, cause I got two in the freezer that old but they seem to be doing fine. they are bagged up pretty good and are not trophies, just a couple of 130-140" eight pointers my son has killed.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

If there in the freezer long enough can you just take them out and hang them up?
Never used photoshop and never will. Photoshop is for liberals.

I don't mean to hijack, but that raises another question I have. I've heard taxi's get capes from processors to mount heads that were cared for less than perfectly. As long as the rack is the same and the deer they use is about the same size, would it matter? Would you even know? Anyone else ever heard this? Would they have to tell you, "Those are your horns, but I had to buy a cape because yours was messed up." So if the OP does end up with a freezer-burned cape/head, couldn't they just do this?
