Hey my names Deven, as of right now im in the army and deployed. I get out of the army jan 2015 and i plan on going into law enforcement and i was wondering if anyone could use a guide when i get out or knows someone that could use one? I guided for several years in Missouri and been on TV and DVD's guiding. I basically want to guide because i really miss it and for some extra cash. Hunting is my biggest passion! If anyone knows anything id appreciate the info. thanks

Jan 2015 is kinda far away for any outfitters to be making any decisions...

Repost the ad about a month or two before your discharge.

Agreed capt. Craig..

A lot changes in 14 months. I'm sure when the time comes and you are still serious in searching then there would be some opportunities but I doubt any ranchers would commit this far out.

The reason why i posted so early is because when i get back i can spend tht 9-12 months going and meeting with the outfitter and getting to know them and them getting to know me. also getting to know the property. and how they run things. and sir you know how the army is, its kinda hard to get off work and schedule things so to do all that in a month or two before i get out will be kinda hard. but thanks guys

Deven -

My business partner has 130,000 acres and we run one of the largest hogs and varmint hunting operation in the state. 3rd largest dove hunt in Texas and a few other notable things, but guiding is not really a part time event. We have a lot of people that want to guide, some with experience and some with no experience. Many many outfitters just don't take people in and make them guides. First they start as a guides assistant doing ALL the nasty and heavy work for a year of more before they ever get close to a client. Ranches have to be managed and roads cut in shooting lanes kept cut, feeders checked regularly and game cams managed and reviewed 3 times a week. Client's game has to be gut/skin/quartered and smaller game has to be managed for the taxidermist. Then there is probably another year or so before they actually get close to a client. Many times staff call themselves guides when they are nothing more than camo chauffeurs driving people out to a blind and picking them up. It takes 5-10 years to truly develop the skill base necessary to be a guide. Guides access the land, determine animal habits and travel routes, determine patterns based on time of year, conditions, and various other info. The other negative involved is some "guides" try to get on with an outfitter to gain knowledge about his operation, then quit and try and poach the property.

I appreciate all you do for our country and hope that on discharge, you can find the job you are looking for.

I guided a ranch in missouri with over 10,000 acres. I did all the scouting, game cams, puttin up blinds and stands, cutting shooting lanes, driving hunters to and from spots and did the food plots, and i did all the skinning and cutting up the animals and everything else you can think of except feeding because you cant feed in missouri. and i did all that by myself with the most 21 people at once (the guy that owned the ranch drove a couple people out) and iv done this for several years so i know what it all takes to be a guide and iv done it with idiot hunters and professional hunters which can vouge and would refer me to anyone. But iv guided for half my life even before i went to the hunting ranch, i did it myself. and ya i believe that some people would do that but not likely when 1. im in the military 2. im going to be a police officer afterwards. i know sometimes business gets to many people ask to hunt and not enough guides so if they needed they could call me and i could help. but thank you
