I would look for something a little bigger, like a 223. You will have a lot more options, especially on the used market.

Depends on what type of varmints you are planning on shooting and from what ranges you think you'll be shooting them at? With that said you could get by with a 22mag or 17hmr for close range stuff without too much wind. Yes, they'll kill father than that with great shot placement. However, .223 is a better choice. It'll give you better range and do better in the wind too. Of coarse you could step up to a much faster and more powful type cartridge like say a 22-250 or .243 too. It all depends on how far you want to shoot and how much you want to spend.

Hey Chef - Can you provide a little more info? Distance you want to shoot, how many rounds do you want to put down range and how quickly? Are you a spray and pray kinda guy or are you looking for a very accurate rifle for 100-300 yards shots?

They are right. More info is needed. There is a ton of difference between shooting a squirrel at 30 feet and trying to kill a coyote at 300 yards.

really depends on the target, 17hmr is an awesome cal and very consistant at 500yrds, more info from you would help... 10/22 is probably best 22 ever made imho... not what i would call a distance varmit gun, but gets the job done @ 50/100yrds and less, I shoot 22mag mostly, but if over 250yrds i prefer little more punch 22-250 several bullet options to choose for 900yrd praire dogs or average 100yrd deer... 2in1 my daughters deer rifle = 1 of my favorite varmiters..till she made it pink! If sound and noise is the issue...stick with the pellet guns

If you want a 22lr, get a 10/22. If you want to shoot varmints bigger than a rabbit, you will need a CF. A 223 is a good choice, a 22-250 is a better choice, but you gotta be careful not to shoot out the barrel on the 22-250.

Oh boy for sure I wouldnt shoot my .17 over 100 at anything i wanted to kill and thats really pushing it to me, i shot a turkey at around 110 yrds and it ran off because it didnt have the power to go in very far. I would say from a .204 to 222-250 would be the best.

This is a very broad question. What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to preserve pelts or do you want them to hit the dirt and not move? What kind of effective range are you after? 100yds? 500yds? Do you want something that will still drop a hog if you see one? What animals are you primarily after? Is weight a concern or mobility? If you're hunting in a high rack all the time you might want a heavy barrel gun that weighs 12 lbs. If you're walking and stalking you will want a 6 lb gun with a shorter barrel.
A lot of varmint hunters that hunt contests use 7 Mags and 300 WM because they don't want the animal to take a step. Fur hunters use everything from rimfire to .204. I personally use a 22-250, 243, or a 270 and sometimes a 12 gauge just depending on what kind of mood I'm in and where I'm going. In my opinion the perfect varmint gun is the 22-250 but my handloads make a BIG exit hole and I'm not after pelts; just after the points in contests. My primary varmint rig is a Savage 16 Weather Warrior in 22-250 with a VXR 4-12x40 with CDS. It's light weight and the 22" barrel is handy, but then my favorite predator hunting is during the day and not in a high rack.

Or you could look into getting the Savage .17 B Mag. it shoots the bullet at 3000fps, which would be good at close range and farther. i have yet to shoot one but i like the reviews on it.

I'd go with a 223 over a 22-250 unless you get a fast twist 22-250. Pretty much all makers sell a 223 with a 1 in 9 twist, which will let you shoot a wide range of bullet weights. You don't really need a heavy bullet for coyote, but my experience has been that when you are looking for coyote, you find pig. For a good sized pig, you want a bullet a bit heavier than the standard twist 22-250 will shoot. And...I'm pretty sure you can get a decent 223 for less than a 22-250 is gonna cost you.
I went through all the above, and finally just switched to my 260. I'd have gone with a 243 if I'd had one.

A .17 hmr drops 6 feet at 375 yards and is traveling about 960 fps compared to about 16" drop on a .223. If you dissolved a bobcat's head at 375 yards I will buy you beer for life.
