My daughter and I got invited to a friend of hers ranch in Carrizo Springs over the Thanksgiving weekend. I've been checking the weather and it looks like highs of 70's, lows of 40's. Thanksgiving is late this year Nov 28-dec 1.
I was wondering what to expect for that area during that time. is the rut kicking in yet? How much cold weather gear is really needed? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Rut is later in mid to late Dec. But Thanksgiving is always the real start of the mature bucks beging to show themselves. A lot big deer killed then due to so many out in the pasture hunting. Just be prepared for a damp cold more than anything if it rains. Temps in the 30's are not uncommon.

I hunt there in Dec each year and rut is later in Dec. Last year it was the week before Christmas. We missed it by a few days. Still saw tons of deer, just not many mature or chasing. We will be there a week after you this year. Should be interesting with all the rain they have had. Food plots can finally be productive again. Corn lots and have fun.

I've been hunting in Carrizo for about 15 years. the way this year is going you will be wet. Predominate wind is out of the South East but strong North winds blow for short times. Rut will be a couple weeks away , good time to rattle, too early for doe in heat scent . IMHO Temps range from 55-80 in the day and 30-60 in the morning. Agree with previous poster, lay the corn out and stay alert, it is hard to see this year due to the heavy cover. Aging deer is more difficult as well, everything is big and fat.

Everything said so far is true. Late Dec for the rut, cold will be wet, everything is VERY green and VERY thick this year. Deer are huge due to large amount of food this year.
I eat what I kill, but I don't always kill what I eat. Girlfriend Wife: "Why am I here?" Me: "So I do not have to open the gate!"

Looks like the front is moving through there today - gonna be nice and cold the next few days and warming up for the weekend. Hope some of the cold weather lingers a bit...

We hunt down in Jim Hogg county and the rut is usually around Christmas with chasing lasting through the beginning part of January. This weekend is going to be a bit warmer than we wanted but should be a good weekend. We have seen many more bucks this year early on than we usually do. Good luck!

Hunted javelina down there on the Bowman ranch last spring. Looking forward to going back for another round after the first of the year.

Our family has 1,000+ acres there...I've seen some very big healthy deer this year. As mentioned above, very green, very thick. Hope y'all have a successful trip!
