Had a weekend hunter call me about hog removal so I tell him the best method after he had done told me he is tired of hogs running his deer away everything they come out to his wheat field or feeder while he is hunting. I told him the only way to truly run them out is to run dogs and dog it hard. I understand its deer season all hunting will be done at night ETC. well he said he dont want to run his deer out because of the dogs... Hmm I'm little confused he wanst the hogs gone but he don't if that makes sense. In my opinion a dog that don't chase deer and only chases hogs is like a coyote that is just moving though in the field. I have personality watch a coyote come though a field with deer in it and the deer not run off. Granted it was 75-100 yards away but still. Trapping hogs work but hogs get smart to traps only works for alittle until they figure it out. Plus to control a hog population u have to shoot or trap up to 80% of the hogs to keep up with reproduction. So in my opinion that's where the dogs come into play because the hogs have no choice but to be caught or run the heck out of dodge.

Well then let's put it in a way that maybe you can understand. Hogs are negatively impacting his deer, but he still has deer. He is afraid that after you get done, not only will he not have hogs, but he won't have deer either.

Hunting at night doesn't avoid the deer, LOL.

The hunter sees a Catch 22, wants he best of both worlds at the same time. Won't happen.

I wouldn't want dogs running on our place during deer season either. I've found that after they get some lead slung at them they tend to move on, even if it's only temporary.

Agree with the hunter. No dogs during season.

You can make your claim that your dogs won't chase deer, but they will spook deer and ruin a hunt.

Hmm considering run dogs every weekend at my ranch in brownwood tx on 2000 acres and we dog it hard. Since oct during bow season we have killed 4 bucks over 145 inches and see 15-20 deer a hunt. (Low fence) I don't see how dogs scare the deer off if the dogs don't even pay attention to the deer.i hunt in stephenville also very hard and the landowner just killed 137 inch buck and was thanking me for running the hogs because he has never seen this many deer since the hogs have thin down. I don't know it's just me thought and theory.

yes he still has deer but don't see many because the hogs don't give the deer to come out into the field. He told me before the hogs he was see 10-15 deer a hunt now he see 2-6 deer and all young deer.

Another amusing thread!

We'll deer hunt in the morning. quail hunt the afternoons, put the dogs up and deer hunt the evenings.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I think that if you work the hogs enough year around you can ease up a bit in and around the deer season. Where I have hogs hanging more, the deer definitely move away or come around less. Deer, like anything else, tolerate the presence of pressure and predator to different levels. On some places, maybe because of habitat, etc., they will hang longer. On others, not. If they have a place that is convenient wherein they have less stress, they will go there. Dogs, coyotes and hogs represent varying levels of threat and stress to them. What each of us observes is a microcosim of their world and may not be representative of their various reactions to the same stimulus on a daily basis.
