I have a question about tags, and the head versus the body. I have always quartered my deer, cut the backstraps myself, and take the quarters to a processor. Most of my hunting was in MS which had no tags.
I killed a very legal buck a few days ago, I left the head/horns with my dad in one town to take to get a Euro mount to a place we know/trust, and took my quartered meat home (200+ miles away) to a family friends processor place. The intake person of my meat was a bit taken back that I did not have my tag, I explained it was tied to my horns which were at a taxidermy place. She took my meat but it opens up that question...
Where should the tag go/stay and was I actually illegal separating? I mean, they almost have to be separated at some point? Also got me to thinking had a I been stopped driving home with a cooler of meat and no tags, would I have trouble?

An elderly gentlemen on my lease killed a buck ..... We sometimes forget in our discussions that even though we live under and are governed by cold and impersonal written law, that law is enforced by man which adds compassion to the mix. It is the duty of the judge to insure that the punishment, if there is to be a punishment, matches the circumstances and the severity of the crime. With a glitch or two occasionally, I think our justice system strikes a fair balance. I have no doubt that the judge in this case will also strike a fair balance.

Gun on safe finger on trigger guard looking at you through my scope, you're as safe as in your mother's arms plus I would never put cross hairs on you and as soon as I identified you I would pull up and open bolt. Then I would scope you out to see why you are on my lease. My scope is way better than my binos. I'd start save dollars for some better binos then. I just look through the scope to pull the trigger. Doesn't take long to switch. I just sit the binos down and then look throught the scope and shoot. Easy.

I put the head in a trash sack and take the deer in. They get to look at the tag and get the number off of it. Then take the head to wherever with the tag. Yes you would be written a ticket for the meat in a cooler alone.

Has anyone ever gotten a ticket and fought it? And your defense would be? Your Honor, the deer wouldn't hold still for me to measure, so I shot it to ground check it. When I realized he did not meet AR, I called 911 but the medics said he was to far gone so we slit his throat.

When I started hunting south Texas, I had to make dang sure whatever cull I shot was really a cull, not a broken 8 or 9 pointer. If I didn't, and shot the wrong buck, there would have been hell to pay.
I studied a deers rack with binos for up to 30 min sometimes before pulling the trigger.
Same concept with AR's. when in doubt, don't shoot
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Some folks probably aren't in doubt when they shoot. In their mind, maybe they were sure it was legal, then walked up to it and went into panic mode.

studying a rack for more than a second can be a problem in east texas, not all of us hunt feeders, a lot of the time you have 5-10 seconds to shoot or not. Not always possible to get the buck to look at you and raise his ear. Hours on the stand and your one oppurnity for the year gone

You do have a very good point.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

What happened to just hunting? great question. we got into a healthy AR debate on our lease a couple years ago and a buddy put it pretty well. "He said all this over an animal, we shoot and eat."

Quarter it, de bone it. Most processors just want a tag at that point.

I put a scope on almost every deer I see, but don't intend to shot most of them.
I hope you are joking. Never point your loaded weapon at anything unless you intend to kill it.
I hope you are joking, we are talking about animals not humans. I would be willing to say if you did a poll of all the hunters with more than 20 years of experience over 99% of them will say they put their scope on a deer to check it out, or put a scope on a animal they didn't shoot for a myriad of reasons. There is a difference between putting a scope on an animal with your finger on the trigger and off the trigger. How many times have your heard I looked at him through my scope?
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

I feel sorry for the old guy. 3/4" is 3/8" on either side. That is a tough one. I do hope the Judge has compassion.

Thanks for all the well wishes gents- I'll pass them along. I want to emphasize that I realize the fault in this instance belongs to the hunter; definately wasn't my intent to "blame" the law. In the end, it'll work out appropriately.
I'll update the thread after the court date...
The thrill is in the hunt, but maximized by success. You define success.

Agree or disagree with AR's, the law is the law. I feel sorry for the man, but age isn't an exception. A shame that it turns fairly honest folks into criminals...wonder how many illegal deer are cleaned behind a barn?

The processing place can get fined for not have a tag with the meat,as well as you ticketed. Most people put tag on horns but....when seperated the tag always stays with the meat . But your suppose to have proof of sex as well I'm pretty sure. But I do know for sure your suppose to have tag with meat until you get it home.

If you are whomever doesn't have a feeder, then throw a little corn out to stop them and /or a grunt call works good to stop them so you can check. The 13 inside is darn close to ear tips in 99% of the bucks here in east tx. So just be sure it's just outside. Or better yet wait for a really big one. If by a chance the buck was past ears and didn't measure out to 13 + take good pics of it being past ears and I'll bet you the judge will drop the case since that's how the book says to get the measurement.

Corn on the trail Monday morning, 10 pt stopped just inside of treeline, smelled corn, made a 180 degree turn and walked back in brush, through binoculars could see two other bucks in back of him who followed suite, both looked like bucks from my summer pics that were probably legal, real legal. A few years ago I would have shot one of those bucks based on the side view. Chances are both were legal based on who I think they were.
Lets just say I have seen a few that are not 13 inches even though the ears did not touch the rack on either side in the alert position. Air space on both sides. High Rack bucks will not meet 13" even with plenty of air space. These are not 1 1/2 year old bucks the law was suppose to be protecting.

Don't shoot an illegal deer and you don't have to worry about it. Here's the obvious solution. If you have to ask yourself if a deer is legal or not, don't shoot it.
