I have duck hunted a huge roost twice now in the morning. 1st time i limited out 2nd time shot 3 but should of limited. But the majority of the ducks are picking up and flying away when its still dark. I can just hear them all get up and keep flying away when few others are staying. I believe there are a couple hundred birds at least at the roost. I was wondering since they all fly away when its dark will they come back in the evening? b/c they dont come back when the sun comes. So i was thinkin it would be better in the evening . Do ducks go back to a roost in the evening? Does anybody know when the best time to hunt it would be? They are always there couple hours before the sun comes up. Thanks.

i'll be the first to say it, more will chime in. go hunt somewhere else. hunting the roost will cause the birds to leave the area. find out where they are going in the morning and hunt there, otherwise, you'll be sorry. you will have a couple good hunts, then your birds will be gone.

this is the only place i can hunt thats the thing. I cant hunt other places and the birds take off before its even at first light so i cant even see where they fly anyways. I plan on hunting it once a week. I dont think that would be to much hunting pressure. But not sure.

The only place you can hunt? How so? Once a week is way to much to hunt a roost. It only takes once for birds to get shot off a roost for them to leave forever. You will never catch em getting up legally before daylight.

My advice is to watch where they go and hunt there. protect that roost like a bucket of chicken at an obama rally. It can be an incredible resource in fact. a jumping off point to figure out where the birds have moved to. but hunt it if you must.

I will say it, roost hunting is not ethical! Also best way to screw others in the area! Birds will not put up with roost shooting! If you can not find where they are going to from the roost in the morning than leave it be and find a new place to hunt!

Don't ever hunt a roost. You will run the birds off.

It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.

My question would be is.... Why is it the only place you can hunt?

Its only okay to hunt a roost on two conditions. I am there, and it is in the evening.

Well thanks guys. It is the only place i have to hunt b/c i dont own any property around the roost and i have asked many landowners already that have said no. So iam stuck with one place. so either way iam still gona hunt it every so often b/c i have no where else to go rite now. But does anyone know when ducks usually come back to a roost? In the evening?...

They come back to the roost right before dark. Most of the time it is past shooting time. They will also come back and hang mid day and loaf.

GP08... I was not trying to be a jerk.

Where are you located?

After you shoot this place out and they move on.... know that there are several places around people can walk into and hunt.

Heck.. half of the guys on here don't have a boat. It just takes some elbow grease on your side to find those places is all. Send TexasHeat a PM... he makes his favorite holes available for everyone.

J/K Heat.

Good luck.

if it is the only place you have to hunt... then hunt it BUT only after they all leave in the morning... shoot the birds that are milling around after the main group leaves... dont stay all day and keep shooting, try and limit yourself to three of four flights and GET OUT before the evening birds come back.

and dont forget to put 50 pounds of corn in the water and on the bank before you go...
