I've found the x on a pretty good sandhill population. There is a barn on a fence line in the middle of the field where the cranes were flying right over working both sides of the field. I would love to park my car in the shadow of the barn and pass shoot them. My worry is that they will flare if they see the vehicle. I could also walk about a mile from the road with my gear and not worry about it. Any suggestions?

Park on side of barn opposite they are flying in from? Cranes are much more skiddish from my experience when I went on some guided hunts last year. Only managed to kill two and that was because we walked about 100 yards from our goose spread and hid behind a hay bale.

Believe me, if I could pull into the barn I would. If I knew where they would be coming from this would be easy but I found them around 4:30pm so I have no idea what direction they will be coming off of the roost from tomorrow.

Assuming you're in zone a, to get in their path I would recommend walking and hiding behind the barn. They have great sight

I was scouting for a new place today as they ain't hitting the spot I hunted last year. They were flying due south and I was driving east. When I got close they put the breaks on and turned hard. I swear I pushed them a mile east before they circled behind. They will NOT like to see your car, moving or not. I always walk a half mile to a mile, or hide the truck opposite of the direction they are coming from. If they're on the ground they will often let you drive or walk to about 200 yards, but when they do eventually fly, they usually will not come your way. From my experience there are three ways to do it, only one good way. 1. Be where they wanna eat before they get there 2. Catch em between food and roost in the evening and have some seriously long range shells for high flying pass shooting. 3. If you can't get there before they show up, and they aren't flying back to roost yet, if you are on one of the best eatin spots for miles and miles, you can just walk out while they're are there. They'll scare but don't worry about it. Cranes are finicky birds and they spook easily. They'll go from field to field all day either to find greener pastures or because they just got spooked off of one. If you find their favorite spot, you'll spook off one flock and another one will land in twenty or thirty minutes. If you're in A spot instead of THE spot, you'll probably be done for the day once you spook em.

Park and Walk in. Sandhills have some of the best eye-sight, and are weary birds as it is.

If you're just hunting cranes, bring some lead. That'll help.

If it has a second floor with outside access, it would be one great blind.

I waited by the barn to see where they would be coming from. They ended up coming off of a playa lake just east of me and headed for a field about 3/4 of a mile south of my location. After I raced down to where they were going, I parked my car and went down about 100 yards on a fence line and set up about 20 wind socks in the field I was in. The problem was that there were already 300 birds in the wheat field next to me and all of the birds were landing in that field. I waited about 5 minutes and here came a line of 20 right to me. I dropped 2 out of that group. I only had about 30 minutes to hunt so I had to pack up and leave. I could have had a third bird easily if I had 15 more minutes. You have to love a job where you can be hunting one minute and dressed an hour later selling insurance.
