My wife and I have been blessed with the opportunity of a life time. We received a call this week that we were selected as the potential adoptive home for an amazing 8yr old boy! We are required to have him as a foster child for six months before we can finalize with the state. We have been busy furnishing his room and making sure we are sell set to receive him tomorrow.
We had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time yesterday. He has been severely abused, physically and emotionally, and I will be the first consistent male figure in his life.
He expressed a strong desire to be able to go on his FIRST hunting trip, and asked how I could help.
My wife and I have spent alot of money lately on furnishings, and with Christmas around the corner, we will be hard pressed to come up with much money for a hunt.
I am NOT looking for a hand-out, but a modestly priced hunt to take him on in the next few weeks (before December hopefully).
I would like him to get a hog or a doe and want his first hunt to be memorable.
If anyone has any leads to extremely economically priced hunts to put my new 8yr old son on his first animal, please post up or let me know Thanks!

Great story, congrats on giving the boy a new home. I hope you find a hunt. Im sure a lot of people will jump on helping you and the kid out. Bobby Greiger has some good priced whitetails. G ranch. but there are a lot of others on here willing to help im sure. I would if i had a ranch.

MSU- thank you for the kind words. We are excited to have him! I was adopted myself when I was 4 months old. We have two biological boys ourselves, but wanted to give a child the same opportunity I had to have a forever home. I am only 26 now, but felt it was the right time to bring another child in to our lives. It is truly a blessing as we were selected out of 147 family submissions. Sooo excited!

You are doing a good thing.
Can you give us a bit of background on the boy regarding hunting? I fully understand you may not know some of this history yet. Has he ever shot a rifle before? Will you be able to teach him basic shooting before the hunt, or will he need to learn on-site at the hunt location. Do you have a rifle for him to use, or will you need one provided?
I want to help any way I can. This information will help us point you in a good direction.

TxAg- Thank you for the reply. I have personally been hunting for the past few years, and own several guns. He has experience with a BB gun, and mentioned he shot beer cans with a shotgun last year. I assume he had help with the shotgun, as he is a pretty little guy size wise.
I can teach him basic hunting and handling skills prior to the hunt. A good friend of mine has, for lack of a better phrase, an armory that we could pick from.
My intention is to find a suitable hunting location, animal, and time, then take him to a local gun range to try out a few weapons and see what he is most comfortable with.
I will most likely send him to hunt with something chambered in .223 as it will be enough to kill most TX animals, but have the lowest amount of recoil.
We would like to stay as close to Austin as possible, but dont mind traveling if needed.

Thank you for the help. We are extremely excited to get him out there and make his dream come true.
Trying to stay as close to Austin as possible, and looking for something in the next 3.5 weeks.

try DB hunting ranch they are just off hwy 29 in bertram. only 30 to 45 minutes from you
hog hunts are inexpensive there and would be a good way to get him some exposure.
Stuff my dad said in the deer blind
"I can dive deeper and come up drier" "did you do that?"

try Hollingsworth Game Ranch http://www.hollingsworthgameranch.com/i have no connection with them other than 1 hunt and they did a good job and are 1 1/2 hours from austin i think they'll let kids hunt a doe for a under 500 dollars. took my son there when he had just turned 8 - he loved it! shot his first deer with .204 advise - my son 'earned' the hunt by shooting 500 bb's with open sights, then 200 pellets with open sights, then 200 pellets with scope. my son put nearly 1000 rounds down range before he moved up to powder but his technique and handling is perfect. just a thought.

I am very blessed to make my living guiding hunters on our ranch. There is no better place for a son and father to bond than in a deer blind. This is more special to me than having my client shoot a 250"buck.I cant wait till I meet him.
