I don't currently own a hunting rifle, but I spotted one at walmart for 184$ (.270 black synth stock). My wife's not convinced this is a good deal. What do ya'll think?

I've known quite a few ppl who have had firing pin issues out of them, but they shot alright up until then.

I'd buy a Savage Axis. They may be ugly but they shoot straight and operate reliably. You are talking the same money.

I would let WalMart hang onto it.

I see the ATR get trashed all the time. Is it the best, no. I have one in .308. Never had an issue and it shoots as good as I do. I've only taken it hunting one time and dropped a red stag hind. When I take it to check out the scope I can keep all the shots touching. Just my .02

The Mossberg ATR 100 is a low end rifle. The action is not smooth, the finish is not pretty, it is a basic utility rifle. With that said, the one we bought for my son is a shooter. It is accurate and will put game on the ground.

Heres my .02. Having owned an atr 100 in the past i can say that they are good shooters but they are à Very basic no frills rifle that leaves alot to be desired. My main complaint is in the action it wasnt the smoothest but it Did shoot Well. If i were you id try and save à little more And buy a ruger American i believe that is the best bang for your hard earned money you can get currently.

To answer your question, 184 bucks for that rifle is a deal. Last year I paid close to 279 with scope for mine at academy. I owned the 270 with the syn stock as well. It shot right outta the box without issue, and I could get a reliable group. Nothing mind blowing but good enough to be confident that it hits where i aim.

I bought the mossberg because i needed a hunting rifle and it fit the bill. I read and article in one of the hunting rags that compared all the "budget" rifles, Atr, Axis, Marlin's cheapo, and I think a TC. The TC came out on top, but not by a wide margin, with all the guns getting decent reviews for what they were. I went on a search for each gun. I did not find a TC. I held them all and liked the Mossberg the best, so I bought it.

The guys are right, the actiion isnt smooth, the stock could use work, it doesnt shoot sub moa, but for a budget conscience HUNTER, it should work just fine.

Good luck.

Read about the ATR, a lot of mixed reviews about it...

If it is in your budget then buy it and don't worry about it. Is she thinking you can get a rifle cheaper? Or does she think there are better quality rifles for that price?

Good Luck

I have a Mossberg 100 atr 30-06 purchased in 2009. The new ATR 100's now have the lighting bolt trigger which mine does not have. Never had an issue with the action unlike the Remington 770 which you have to play to get it cambered. (worked at Academy and every 770 no matter the caliber had issues with the action) I did remove the original scope on the rifle and replaced it with a Nikon BDC. Longest kill shot with 30-06 was on a hill top on a whitetail buck 525 yards away. The pros is the price and floating barrel/ the con would be the internal magazine. If I may make a suggestion, go to a nearby gun range and go to the rifle range. See if you can spot anyone with a Mossberg or other brand rifles you maybe interested in and ask the shooter some question or maybe they will even let you fire off a shot.

If you throw in an extra $1000, you can almost get Winchester Model 70 Super Grade.

I had an ATR briefly. It was an okay shooter. It never broke, but someone else's DID break, and when I saw the photos of it the implications were pretty scary. I can't find the same photo I saw then, but here's another one.

I'd think about the implications of this kind of failure.

I can't comment on the gun other than they sell for a little over $700 here and have OK to good reviews... Good enough that I was about to buy one when I won the bid on a mauser....
But since walmart shopping is mentioned, can anyone tell me what they handle for lever action 30-30's and a rough price?

I have a new one I bought for my daughter and the bolt will not stay locked down on it once the round has been chambered. Other than that it does well.

I had one for 2 years. Used it as a truck gun. That's about all it was good for, if your budget allows, pick up a savage axis and you'll be much happier IMHO

I have one in a 30-06 and my dad has a .270. We haven't had any trouble out of ours. Pretty good shooters for a low end rifle.

Went to walmart yesterday to pick it up. Gun was sold and they won't be getting anymore--this is why it was priced at 184. Oh well.

Negative! She didnt like it from the start, it kicked to hard she said. It doesnt unlock when shooting , just when your carry with the shoulder strap. It just doesnt lock in place as tight as other rifles.
