Just got my rifle back and I need to pop on my scope...working all week and wont have any time to really take her to the range to get it sighted for this weekends hunt....can I just go to academy or cabela's and get it bore sighted and will it be accurate or should I figure a way to make some time to go sight it in?

Make some time to get it sighted in. Bore sighting will just put you in paper... Hopefully.
I don't smoke ,so I can't say but I highly doubt it. I do know a loud fart works! I think they like the smell plus I guess they think it's a buck grunt. _________________________

No. It needs to be sighted in after being bore sighted. Call in sick.

Got to make time. You can get close with bore sighting, just by looking down the barrel and adjusting the scope to what you see through the bore. That should get you on paper.
But, you still need to shoot the dang thing. I have seen some atrocious bore sight jobs from reputable businesses.

I'd find a way to get it dialed in. I had academy note sight one that was so far off I couldn't even hit paper at 25

No need to go to Acedemy
Remove the bolt, and find something small 50-100 yards away Looking through the barrel center that target now adjust the scope to the same target
Go back and forth a few times
This should get you on paper at 50 yards to really sign in with most rifle cartridges you can sight in dead on at 50 which should put you 1/5 to 2" high at 100 and back to zero at 200.
This shouldn't need to be said but I will anyways. Never shoot at game farther than you have shot on target.

I see you are in Central Texas If you are in Austin I would be glad to help I change scopes like most people change underwear.
My dad said some guy at an Elk camp in Colorado 20 years ago showed up with a gun that had just been bore sighted and was planning to go hunting. He offered to help the guy but his pride got in the way.. guess who missed the next day?

Not just no but heck no. As others have said, bore sighting will get you on paper but that's about it.
Take some time to sight in that scope correctly and practice with the rifle.

I am in Austin as a matter of fact. PM me and maybe you can give me some more advice on it, I'd greatly appreciate it! I am just stretched on time before saturday. New baby, trying to cover lots of hours for time off, and saving money is always nice. Leaving friday right after work with maybe an hour or two tops for room to spare..

Don't know where you live but some ranges around me sight in a rifle for 20 bucks + ammo. I think that would be well worth it.

Bore sighting can be pretty far off. I my experience it will only get you on paper and often just barely do that. I would definitely find the time to sight in.

Find a way to sight in yourself. Even at night with bright headlights . Just zero at 50 yards. It will be just a little high at 100 yards.

it MUST be shot at a range no two ways around that.
what kind of rifle and scope is it? Do you already have ammo that you know shoots well with the rifle?

Not the easiet round to come by but im stock piled to say the least haha. KInda ammo when you find it you buy it up. Ill just have to duck out early to sight in before leaving for my property. Thanks for the advice guys

If you had decided to take the rifle hunting after bore sighting alone, you would not have been alone. It's a very common mistake by those who don't know better.
Once you have it bore sighted where you can hit anywhere on a paper target, you can zero it without taking another shot, although I would strongly recommend you do as a final check.
1. Take a good and honest 100 yard shot at the target center using a solid rest. If you don't feel the shot was a good one, take another. The remaining step and accuracy of your scope adjustments depends greatly on the correct aim point of this initial shot. You can also choose an aim point an inch high as many do to create a zero that supports longer shots if you wish.
2. Place the gun in a gun vise or some other method where it can be held completely still and aimed at the center of the target (or an inch above the center), just as it was aimed when the earlier shot was taken.
3. With the gun held still and the scope aimed at the target center (or inch higher), adjust the scope so that crosshairs line up with the point of impact from the earlier shot. In doing so, you're simply adjusting the scope so that it lines up with the point of impact when the gun was in the very same position as before.
4. Take another shot just to confirm the zero.
Glad you asked, and good luck once you're truly ready to hit the woods.

Sight it in. I'm going to sight my rifle in this evening. I downloaded the Remington Shoot Program and it has an option to enter in your info to get the optimal performance for the load you'll use. It works for my .243 now I'll see if it works for my 30-06.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.
