Hello yall. So I'm new to hunting and everything that goes with it. A little background on me, I'm 36 and been wanting to hunt since I was about 10. Always had friends/family/co-workers say they would take me but never did. I had not a clue how to really get into it and always assumed it was expensive.

Well I'm finally going this November in Wharton, Tx and then again in Del Rio, Tx at the end of the year. Pretty sure I will like it as I love eating wild game and shooting. I hope to learn a lot around here and hopefully be a productive member of the hunting community. I just finished my Texas Hunter Safety Course and will be going to Academy to get my license on the weekend.

As of now I am gun less, buddy I'm going with is letting me use his Browning Bar .270, and also clueless on what to expect or do while on the hunting trips. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hopefully it will all work out for you. That's a long time to wait and finally get a chance to go. Goodluck and welcome

What to do on a hunting trip?? hmm

Have a great time, enjoy the neat things you will be rewarded with seeing, dont let yourself ever get into the " I spent $$, so I HAVE to kill something" That will take the fun out of it.

Watch what better seasoned hunters do and dont let yourself become a "hunting store/stuff junkie" IMO most of that stuff is wasted space.

Be honest with the guys you hunt with, about your skills or lack there of, there will be an old guy like me that would help you through the gutting process or just in general pass on anything that may/may not help grin .

Every camp seems to have a know it all that never seems to harvest anything more than a cold beer, he may be fun, but look for the guys that "hunt". Learn patience and you will surpass allot of hunters. When in camp situations, always do/pay your part, you'd be surprised how often that causes trouble and a quick "boot"

Main things is Relax, enjoy and be safe.

This is just my honest opinion worth what you paid for it LOL and only scratches the surface, so enjoy the ride .

I am also new to hunting, well deer hunting. I have been waterfowl hunting for a couple of years and I found it really beneficial starting with birds and moving to big game.

Just a suggestion obviously, but definitely look into duck and goose hunting (next year go dove hunting). Taught me to stay still and brush blinds because ducks and geese can pick you off easy.

Congrats on starting up, you will have a blast and create bonds/memories that will last a life time.

Above all else, be safe and be professional!

Get up early, eat breakfast and go hunting. Back to camp for lunchn then go hunting. Back to camp after dark, build fire and cook dinner. Drink a few beers with buddies, go to sleep. Repeat process until you need to gut something. up
That's the condensed version. Most of all, enjoying yourself is most important.

First and foremost, if you are borrowing a gun, go to the range and check it for accurateness! Then, when you get to camp, check again to see if gun is still sighted in, should only take one shot. Then, you are ready to hunt and have fun.The main rules for hunting camps are safety, help with cooking, dishes, and leave place better than how you found it. Other than that, pretty simple, have a good attitude, and ask people to show you how to do stuff.

Get used to shooting the gun first, after that, be safe and have fun. Good luck.

Defiantly this. You don't want to wound an animal. If you are not 100% sure don't pull the trigger. You don't have to kill something to have a successful hunt.

Thanks for all the great and helpful replies!! That's hard to find now days on intranet forums. I do plan to hit the gun range to practice with the gun. My buddy informed me him and his daughter have it sighted in and if I miss, "that's on you" lol. We will be hunting deer in Wharton, Texas, leave Friday (11-22) mid morning and return Sunday (11-24), hopefully with a harvest.

Someone made mention of bird hunting, this is also something I would really like to get into. Hopefully with this forum and now actually getting in the hunting community I can do that. Another reason I want to start Hunting is my son will be 3 in may of 2014 and I'd really like to get myself familiar so I can start taking him when he gets a tad older. Once again thanks for all the "hellos" and comments.
