It's time to replace the toilets in our house. They're about only 9 years old and the ports have gotten too clogged with hard water residue and the sides are not rinsing correctly. I won't be installing a water softener so...

The Question: Is there a toilet that resists accumulation of hard water clogging?

Any recs on a make/model?

Flush the toilet then pour some of this down the standpipe. http://www.thecarycompany.com/containers/facility/clr-multisurface.html

Suggestion, take a mirror with you and look at the rim holes of the display toilets. The bigger they are the less likely this will happen again. I work for one of the major manufactures and can tell you there is a sizable difference in makes and brands.

good luck!

Certain toilets are designed with several large holes at the front, instead of many small ones lining the rim.
Toto Carusoe does this. Problem is, when the #2 is more like a #1 the bowl does not rinse well with a flush...

Toilets are really cheap. Just replace them every several years.

Why not put in a water softener? I'm not very handy and I put one in by myself.

Went with some mid range priced Kohlers. The peeking under the lip tip made the difference. Some had small ports with very little porcelain lining them. The Kohlers we bought had double the size holes with much more porcelain. Don't know if they'll stand the test of time, but they did pass their first test.

I don't think it matters what brand of toilet you go with or if the holes are really big or not.If you don't find a way to get rid of the hard water residue then the same thing is going to happen again.

In Ruidoso we have water that is so hard it almost has rocks in it. About once a year we run vinegar through the system, then use a 22 caliber gun cleaning wire brush to clean the holes under the rim.

We learned about that Ruidoso hard water after spending the first four months there in our camper.Pat had been trying to get some spots off the kitchen faucet for some time but she wasn't having much luck keeping them off.The second year three of us decided we had had enough and bought portable water softeners and they worked great for that Ruidoso water.
