Took my 14 year old grandson Cyrus hunting this past weekend and not only had a great time but a successful hunt. We hunted a blind that sits on a ridge overlooking a valley floor and hardwoods treeline. I guess it was about 8am Cyrus says " Pa Pa, Buck BBBUCK!" I look to the right and saw him for about 10 seconds before he slipped back in the woods. I grabbed my grunt tube hit a loud growl on it and out came the buck, all blowed up with head down and ears laid back. Across the pasture he came and hung up just below the ridge staring at a doe decoy I had set out on the ridge, all we could see was the top of his head and antlers. One more time on the grunt call and over the ridge he came almost charging straight at us, Cyrus had his 30/06 ready and the buck came all the way in to 40 to 50 yards of the blind before he turned and offered a quartering shot. Cyrus made a great shot and the buck ran off about 100 yards before piling up. Man where we both pumped, buck fever didn't really hit him until after the shot and he was shaking like a leaf on a tree. We waited a few minutes then went and put our hands on him, a big 150 pound main frame 8 with stickers off the bases of his main beam. Back in the blind that evening the feeder goes off and immediately we had 2 young Does come out, after glassing them we decided to let them grow up up and set in to wait and watch, a few minutes later a huge 9 point buck with heavy mass to his main frame that carried all the way out and up each tine with tall tines and brow tines comes in. One of the first times I have seen a mature buck come to a feeder where we hunt in Nemo. Man how wished I was in my bow stand perched above that feeder! We both glassed him for several minutes in awe of his head gear when again Cyrus says " Pa Pa, Ppppig coming!" I look to the right and just about where we had seen the buck first come out that morning, the big boar was headed our way and looked like a black cow in the pasture, a huge Boar! He hung up about 2oo yards off and looking like he might slip back in the woods I had Cyrus take him when he turned broadside, he turned, Cyrus shot and he dropped right in his tracks, great shot Cyrus! After high fives and knuckles we went and put our hands on the boar. I'm really proud of Cyrus, he has now killed 5 deer, a gobbler and one huge boar and all have been with 1 shot 1 clean kill. He killed 2 doe on his first hunt at 8 years old with 1 shot each. You can't tell I'm proud can ya?

The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
