Hey guys I have been looking for a gun for my wife for christmas with not much luck. I'm trying to get her into hunting and she has finally shown some interest in shooting hogs and bears. She still thinks elk and deer are too pretty! Anyways to make a short story long I'm looking for a girly looking pink rifle that she could kill a bear or hog with. She wants an AR but I would rather start with something else. Any Ideas??

X2 on the 7mm08.... It's a lights out cartridge on game and a great rifle for a lady IMHO

25-06 would also be a great choice.

Don't be too smart for your own good. If she wants an AR, buy her an AR.

The AR would be sweet for her. Check out 68forums.com. 6.8 is a 270 short built for the AR platform. Uses same basic parts as 223, except barrel, bolt, and mag. See where I'm going with this?
6.8 is a fine low recoil cartridge for deer and hogs to moderate ranges. GO FOR IT!!!!

First of all, it seems strange to me that one would be more willing to shoot a bear than a deer. But then again I can totally see the cuteness argument from a woman's perspective.

Movin on, to me this post will be much more fruitful to you if you knew the budget. Whether it be for just the rifle or rifle and scope combo or all in.

Personally when I went through this exact situation, we settled on getting a Savage model 11 THXP in 243 because the price was perfect at just right under $500 (for rifle, a Nikon scope that came with the package, and Talley rings), the platfrom itself has many options if we want to upgrade later, and the caliber was not my first choice (7mm-08) but more than good enough to take down hog and some deer.

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I just got my wife a 7mm08 from Marlin. Sighted it in with a 4.5-14 Nikon and she loves it.

My thoughts exactly. If she shows interest and wants an AR, get her an AR and keep her interested.

+1 Buy her a high quality set-up, at least as nice as what you have, preferably way better.

You will be glad you did.

Got my wife a Rem. Mod. 7 in 7mm-08. Fits her perfect and it'll handle anything out at the ranch.

Get her the AR. smile 223 wouldn't be my first choice for bear, so you might look at some of the larger chamberings available.

Buy the gun of your choice, so if she quits hunting you will have a good rifle. Have the gun duracoated with pink of her flavor, will last a long time if treated will TLC. Noticed the other day where Durocoat now has an all in one aerosol can.

I would not be opposed to letting my wife carry an AR style for hunting hogs. I would only let her hunt bear if I were also sighting the same animal just in case. A wounding graze can piss-off otherwise happy bear. I would go with .300 BLK. Add a suppressor for hogs and run a 208g A-Max. She'll get more than one shot at almost every encounter if you take ones grazing at the edges.

If you want a bolt gun for her, I second the Savage Lady Hunter in 7mm08. Good size and recoil for ladies.

I am on this road right now. My wife shoots my 300wm very well. I picked up a used 700 ADL in 7mm-08 and had a Boyd's stock in my stock pile. Did a quick bedding Thursday and reloaded some rounds necking up some 260 brass. Topped with a leupold lady leupold scope she shot several 1/2" groups with it today in Glen Rose.

Load was pulled out of my butt

Hornady SST 139gr
Varget
F210M primer
Rem 260 brass cause I have a metric ton of it.

7mm08 with a muzzle break on the end. My wife loves it; just make sure she has ear plugs.

Zero reason for break on 7/08 my daughter starting shooting hers she weighed about 75 lbs the noise of a break is not worth the trade.

This +1, Had some 150's loaded up for her and she shot them with ease and without much discomfort. I think a small child would be able to shoot a 7-08 well if it was setup right even without a break

I second the 7mm08. I you can also get the Rem 140 gr. Managed recoil bullets for it I have shot them in mine and the recoil is much less than the standard bullet.
