I guess it depends on if your walking in or are you able to drive to where your going ?

x2
If you are walking in, then it is limited to how many you can carry. If you have a boat, or can drive up, then you have more options.
Also have to know what is normally there. Scout it out. For a small pond, I would not think more than a dozen.
Open water, all that you have.
Field hunting, I've never done for duck - did for geese and there were a couple of hundred for that.
Hope that helps.

generally 2-3 doz on small ponds but as few as 6
Often run bigger numbers when i hunt bays but due to kayak capacity it never more than 5/6 dozen.

I rolled 30 deep this last weekend and it did fairly well. So I think I'm gonna roll with 2 mojos, 30 coot, and 24 mixed duck decoys this weekend.

The key to a good decoy spread is movement!

I actually will have the opportunity to hunt all of these different kinds of water this year at one point or another. Mostly driving in but some walk ins. The info you guys gave does help though. Anyone use the Mallard Machine for movement?

I think I will empty both trailers, ducks, geese, cranes, full bodies, floaters, silo socks ,flyers , mallard machine, all the mojo decoys we have , wake maker , and I think by then there will be no room for them to land and we can shoot them hovering over that small opening in the middle

After world war 2, my grandfather used a bunch of old german officers wooden shoe inserts as decoys. Worked great.

I hunt a lot different. 5ac or less 6-8 dekes, over 5ac I will drop 12 and sometimes if it is very open water (not in a cove or creek) 24 dekes. Depending on amount of wind there will 1-3 weasel ball loaded dekes out. Always pull birds if they are around.
