I have the opportunity to hunt Gems Buck and a few other large animals. I am shooting a 270win Savage. The ranch manager said it was on the light side. I'm looking for 150 grain bullet. What brand and model would suggest?

I took a bull elk with the Hornady SST's in 150 grain. If you only have a .270 that is what I would use. If you can get you self something in the .30 cal range it would be much better.

hornady sst is a great round but i started using one last year and it is amazing. its the hornady 130 gr interbond light mag. the ballistics are better in both the trajectory and the energy across the board of any other .270 round. larger or smaller...

Sorry I am the first to not like them, but I dont have anything real good to say about the hornady sst's. They seem to be lightly constructed bullets, and would in my opinon be a bad choice. My brother shot a aoudad ram this weekend with some 150 hornady interlocks, a better constructed bullet for heavy animals than the SSt's are. I loaded it a about 2700 fps and it still only retained 18% of its original weight, in my opinion that is pitiful, now I wished I hadnt just loaded up 50 of the things.
I would recomend Some 150 grain nosler partitions, they are a much better "big game" bullet than the sst's are and will retain at least 60% of its weight in the rear core alone yielding much better penetration.
Other good option would be barns TSX, swift a frames, or Trophy bonded bear claws, however the partition will do just as well and is about the cheapest you will find.

yeah those light mag loads are badass. they are over 3100 fps at the muzzle. much faster than anything else. mine is a tack driver. the best bullet for weight retention is the swift scirrocco, its also the flattest shooting if you take the hornady light mag out of the picture. now the only 2 light mags that hornady makes for the .270 is the 130gr in interbond and the 150 gr i believe in the soft point. the interbond holds its weight retention much better than the sst....

I agree, I think a balistic tip or an accubond would be a bad choice as well, but I am not sugesting one of them, I sugested a partition, completely different bullet.
I am sure they will probably all do the job, but I wouldn't use any tipped bullet other than a tipped TSX, or noslers new E-tip. JMHO

ive never liked the partition bullets. my dad used to swear by them in his 7 ultra mag. when he sent his scope into leupold to have target turrets put on, we went on a mission to find the most consistent and hardest hitting bullet. we landed on the swift scirrocco. for about 90% of the ammo out there, the swift is the ticket for the best weight retention, etc. now i settled on hornady lightmag interbond. ive killed deer and hog with it and it performs great. doesnt blow the exit wound out like it would seem. great performing round.... but i know you nosler guys are a hard sell

I would recommend Federal Premium Trophy Bonded.
Also, might want to look into the Winchester Elite XP3. I am hearing some pretty good things about them, however I have not seen for myself firsthand.

a gemsbok isn't that tough. load up with some partitions or a Trophy bonded bear claw and you'll be fine.
if you can get them, some fail-safes and some shoulder shots will anchor just about anything.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My brother got an very healthy 8pt through both shoulders with 3100fps 130gr SST in 270 win I loaded. Destroyed the first shoulder, heart lung area and decent exit hole. No bullet recovered on 150yard shot.
Of the bonded bullets, I think it is the toughest. It has a cannelure to help hold the bullet and jacket together.
It is not, however, a dual core bullet like the Swift A-frame or Nosler Partition.
When all is said and done, there is a lot more said, than done.

i also dont like the light mags from hornady. they are very sparatic. i might have one good but the next may be inches off. or maybe not, just hard to say. no one that i know has had good grouping from them. i shoot a .270 exclusively and like the remington premier scirrocco. those are a 130 gr though. hornady does make the 150 gr in the sst or interbond. that would be my choice.

Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Don't want to sound too smarta$$, but I would have to go with the new 270 WSM cartridge. Just bought one and it is a shoulder crunching tack driver. Only 100 ft per second slower that the Weather Mag.- and will nail them out to 500 -600 yards and would probably accurately shoot further if I could see that far.
Now remember - You did ask "what's the best 270 round"

I use 130 Winchester Ballistic silvertip and have killed 3 elk and several mule deer. I have not had a problem with them. I think it is more about what shoots the best out of your gun and shot placement.

I hated the 130 gr. silver ballistic tips. Animals shouldnt run that far on pretty much perfect shots. Go accubond

Assumping factory loads, 1st choices would be Federal 150 Nosler Partion or 150 XP3 Winchester for larger game in the .270.
