This glutton has developed a taste for corn and is one of the first ones to the feeder. Gonna Catch a bullet or an arrow very shortly he keeps up this behavior

just a dumb young one.... bet a paintball to the ribs or a bb gun to the butt would teach him a good lesson and get him off the feeder for a while... smile

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

They get an attitude. Seen video in the 90's of a mature 8 WT and 4-5 yr old axis in a fight in deer season. Was taken in Frio County. Would have thought the WT would win but the axis shoved him all over the place. They fought for a while also.

we never had problems with the axis running the whitetail off except for this one.

most play nice. however our axis are considerably bigger than even a mature whitetail so the whitetails will back off before the axis will.

we rarely ever see an axis at the feeder. They are pretty dang smart and once we start hunting and driving around the place they hole up in the brush and only come out at night.

Even a young Axis buck is heavier than the biggest WT where I hunt. A mature Axis is much heavier.

Very interesting-our Axis won't go out of their way for corn, unless we are in a major drought. If we want to bring in the Axis we put out an alfalfa bale.

Would imagine the axis has a little more reach than the WT.

Treat them the same as feral pigs.

Roll that one asap. He has proven himself to be disruptive to the native game.

what? axis carry a lot more weight than a feral hog.

that if that deer had horns of any size he could eat at the feeder all he wants

I certainly disagree that he's young, given his grey face/neck. But the angle does make him look small. Obviously the 2nd pic proves he's a dominant buck that has personal space issues.

It's interesting you say that. More and more people are beginning to think like this. I believe the axis is the 2nd most invasive species we have, behind the Feral Hog obviously. Fortunately, right now the Axis is still sought after and draws some what of a premium to be hunted. But at the current rate of expansion/growth, I don't think it will be long and the Axis will be a major issue to our native game. I occasionally hunt a ranch in Kendall county and that ranch owner tells us to shoot every one we see, even the babies...of course I don't have much of a problem eating them, so that OK with me! smile

I've hunted WT for over 40 years and I'd rather hunt an Axis any day. An Axis that knows he's being hunted is much more elusive than the Wiley old WT"s I've hunted in my past. As far as table fare its not even close. Just my .02

Problem is that the area the axis typically inhabit are shared by malnutritioned whitetail that don't grow decent sized horns.

So it begins a toss up of keeping the bigger, more majestic animal that is introduced or the scrappy little native whitetail.

I am very fond of axis deer. They coexist very nicely with our whitetail and have not given us any issues other than killing a ornamental tree and tearing up a fence or two

They are very welcome in our pasture

That whitetail is no slouch, but I bet that big bodied Axis will push him around wherever he wants.
