Currently the only rimfire I own is a single shot Cooey 22LR that dates to the 1930s. It has been a decent gun but I want to replace it. I am currently thinking 22 WMR or 17 HMR.
I was considering 17 WSM but the choices for this are pretty limited right now.
I have traditionally been a bolt action kind of guy but could be convinced to go another route. Primary use will be varmits and small game.
My budget is $600 for gun and scope. What do you recommend?

Get a Savage 17 HMR and you can get a nice scope to top it off.

I'm thinking .17 WSM after it comes out in something beside a Savage!
A CZ would be awesome!

I really want a 17 WSM, but I am not hearing good things about ammo consistency. Plus, I think the Savage B-mag is ugly. Hope they get ammo worked out, and more attractive rifles available.

I am seriously considering a MGM barrel in 17 WSM for my contender. $350 plus 20 shipping and I already have frames and stocks.

Volquartsen will start taking orders for a semi-auto in 17 wsm at the shot show in 2014. I would expect it to be pricey.

I love CZ rimfires I have a scout for the kids with a 2-7 Weaver rimfire scope and mine is the American with a 3-9 Weaver rimfire
both will put rounds in the same hole at 50 yards with ammo they like.
I did the Brooks trigger job to both with my American being set lighter.
I shot it Sunday for the first time in about 5 years out to 100 yards, I love that rifle!
I had a 17HMR from them when the round first came out and it was a shooter as well.

Already having a 22 in your collection, go for a 17.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Based on responses so far I have narrowed the field to 2 contenders:
CZ 17HMR Savage 93R17 (laminate with stainless barrel)
Scope to be a 3-9x - best that the budget affords

I just bought the Savage 93R17 with thumbhole stock and bull barrel. Stuck a Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 on it and couldn't be happier with the combo. It's lights-out accurate. I've never personally shot a rifle that could hold these groups at 100 yards. 17 HMR seems to be a great all-around varmint round, and Savage makes a killer rifle for the money.
What is the price difference between the Savage and CZ? I can't imagine the CZ being superior in any technical aspect.

I just brought home a Ruger American 22. It has a fantastic trigger and I really like the adjustable stock. Out the door it was $245. Still need to put a scope on it but it is a pretty neat gun.

If you don't have a Ruger 10-22 I recommend getting one.
