I had sod planted 6-7 weeks ago and now i'm seeing several shoots of nutgrass here and there.Sometimes I can pull it up and get some of the roots but most times it just breaks off and I was told the nut is still down there.I was also cautioned to be careful on using products because they might also kill the new lawn and it's the wrong time of year to try and kill it.Any suggestions on treating it now ?. Thanks

I don't know how to get rid of it, but keeping it mowed regularly should prevent the stickers from forming. Man, those things are painful on peoplen and puppies.

If you keep pulling them up you will eventually kill them. But it does take a while and you have to be persistent.
There is also a nut grass killer that is mostly cinnamon. It works pretty well.

I grew up on a cotton farm in Arkansas. The answer to this question was always, "The only way to get rid of nut grass is to move off and leave it."

I forget the name but there is a poison especially for nut grass that will kill it. I had the same problem as you and it was in a st Augustine lawn. I used an old towel soaked in poison and pulled it over the nut grass and since I mine was really thick, It held the towel up off the lawn. If yours is not that thick you could probably use a lighter piece of material or even a paint brush to apply the poison. Easier and more effective than pulling it up....OR just move as BO suggested...

MSMA.....if you can get it. I believe it's been outlawed for everything but golf courses and commercial use. It might be highly toxic but makes for a beautiful yard.

As long as you aren't able to still pull your sod squares up, you can treat with weed killers. You can buy a product called Image from Home Depot to Lowes. There is also a product called Certainty, but I don't think it's sold at your local hardware stores. We buy ours from John Deere Landscaping. The most important thing in controlling "sedges", is reading the label. Most products recommend not watering or mowing 48 hrs prior to and after treatment. Good luck!
How are you gonna shoot a squirell if you're lookin at your feet?

Not sure where to get it but look up a product called Sedgehammer. It is very effective and will not harm any grass if used the way its labeled.

I went to home depot and talked to a woman in the nursery who seemed to know a lot.She also said Image would be fine to use but I decided to wait a little longer.Today the man that put the sod down called me on another unrelated matter.I finally asked him about the nutgrass and he said it probably came from the sod farm.He might stop by tomorrow on the other matter and if he does i'll have him look at the lawn and see what he recommends. Thanks guys O,and i'm NOT moving

Now is a perfect time to put any product down. The nut grass did not come from the sod farm. MSMA does not work on sedges and is actually no longer commercially available. You cannot rid nut grass by pulling it. Sedgehammer and Image are your answers. Mix according to directions in a sprayer and add a surfactant (a few drops of dish soap per gallon is easiest for homeowners). Or the big box retailers may sell it in a small bottle type sprayer. Spot spray as you need. Or, save yourself the time and money and hire a professional.

Nutsedge is usually a sign of unhealthy grass and low ph in the soil. I have fought this stuff for years and a couple years ago i started spreading peat moss on my St. Augustine to fight Take All Root Rot. I saved my yard and have very little to no nutsedge. The Peat moss will raise the ph and nutsedge doesn't like that.

On those Sedge killers, you want to spray and water them in. They don't kill like roundup and have to be taken into the sedge part of the plant, not the leaves/blades. You won't see 24 hour results due to this.
If you don't get it into the ground, your just pizzing away $$$.

The best I have used- will take about 2 weeks for it to disappear after spraying it. However, you'll have to apply again next year Not sure where to get it but look up a product called Sedgehammer. It is very effective and will not harm any grass if used the way its labeled.
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

Disagree, have seen plenty of Nutsedge and Crabgrass in new sod Now is a perfect time to put any product down. The nut grass did not come from the sod farm. Spot spray as you need. Or, save yourself the time and money and hire a professional. I read a study out of Auburn (or Clemson?), where Sedgehammer out-performed Image and other products. It is important to use a surfactant. Mix it up in a pump sprayer and spot treat. Because nut sedge has a tuber, or nut, re-spraying every 2 weeks or so may be needed. When we had our new lawn put in 2 years ago, we were growing as much nut sedge as desirable grass. I found that Sedgehammer remained stable in its mixed formulation for several weeks. So, I just spot-sprayed my lawn about every two weeks, and the weed was entirely gone after three sprayings, most of it after the first spraying. Each spring, a few sprigs of nut sedge pop up, and a quick hit with Sedgehammer does the trick. I had trouble finding Sedgehammer locally (everyone has Image), but found it online out of North Carolina. It's worth every penny.
