I received a sales ad from bass pro today and they have a savage rifle on sale for $199.88 in 30-06 and 270. I'm not a fan of savage or 270 or the 30-06 but at this price I may have to buy one of each.

I know that you think I only shoot 50 cal. BMG's, but buying a 270 and a 30-06 would be like marrying sisters. I mean if you want 2 rifles, that is okay, I have no problem with that. But to get 2 rifles that are so close in performance levels, that just don't make a lot of sense.
How about buy 1 of the 2, say the 270, save your money and then buy one of the 30 magnums. With those 2 guns you could hunt anything in North America, and not feel over or under gunned. JMO

I already have rifles that I can hunt anything in north america(22-250 HA HA) but you cant ever have to many rifle and calibers (unless you ask my old lady she says I have to many but I say she has to many pairs of shoes). For a $199 it sounds like a hell of a buy I might even get her one for x-mas. Who knows one day I might buy one of those shoulder cannons.

270 gets my vote. Unless, you plan on doing some really long distance shooting. Then perhaps the 7mm Mag or the 300.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat and never look back. They are cheaper as far as stock and action go, but they are durable and reliable. Savage puts all the money in their barrels. It will be one of the most accurate rifles you have ever fired. Dont worry about the price or the quality. They are good rifles. A .270 would be perfect for just white tail hunting. If you plan on hunting elk or Mule deer or antelope, a 7mag, 300 or even a 30-06 would be better. Some say a 280 is the all around perfect North American calibre...some say its the 30-06. Some say 300 or 7mag. You can rest assured any town you go in you can find 30-06 bullets though. Even hardware stores in some small towns carry them. Any of those calibres will do the job. Its up to you.

This is for you, and Trigger4u. Now mind you, I don't and wouldn't own either a 270 or 30-06. And yes, in any town you go to in the good ole U.S. of A., you are going to find, 22 long Rifle, 30-30 Winchester, and 30-06 shells.
But, just to clear up something about those two guns and killing power and long range capabilities, ruminate while I elucidate.
I, along with 5 other guys, watched a feller shoot a 5x5 bull elk up on a ridge, on private property, just outside the White river National Forest in western Colorado. This bull had came out with 8 cows, running in and out of the timber down the top of the ridge.
Now part of the group were hunters, and part of it were guides. I was helping the guide crew. Pudge Cox, the outfitter I hunt with grabbed the guy that was going to do the shooting by the arm and hurried him over to an aspen trunk that had blown down, that was laying up against a tree that was still standing. The hunters name is Junior Carr and I believe he is from Ohio or West Virginia, can't remember which.
Anyway, Pudge tells Junior to get ready, and the rest of us ae glassing the ridge top. About 5 minutes or maybe a little more, thos e same elk, came busting back out of the brush, headed back to the National Forest. Well, the bull comes out last, and Pudge tells Junior to take the shot. Junior doesn't really seem that enthusiastic about his chances, but Pudge keeps saying shoot.
Junior finally eases down and lets off a round, and it kicks dirt up just under the bull. It hops a couple of feet to the side, and Pudge says shoot again. So Junior pulls down on the bull again, and this time he bull humps up, and we hear the bullet hit.
Me and a couple of the other guys are watching the bull thru our binoculars, and we see the bull hump up, then stagger a few yards and go down.
After the bull goes down and doesn't try to get back up, Pudge, his brother-in-law Dan, and goofy here, take off up the ridge to see what we are going to have to do to get that bull down.
From the time we left the spot Junior was shooting from, till we got up to the bull, gutted him, and got back to where Junior was still setting, was a little over 45 minutes.
A good friend of mine that was on the same hunt, but wasn't with us when this bull was shot, was brought out the next morning when we went back to get that bull off the mountain, he had bought a new range finder and wanted to try it out.
Pudge set him down at the spot Junior had been shooting from, and we showed him the gut pile. From the best that could be figured out, the gut pile, which was laying beside the bull, was right at 550 yards + or - from the spot where Junior had shot. The bull had went about 20 to 30n yards after being hit.
The shot had caught the bull in the top part of the left shoulder, broke it, went thru the lungs, broke the right shoulder and exited. It was a 150 grain bullet out of a 270.
The main advantage of a 30-06 over a 270 is availability of shells, the intrinsics are that the 06 has more power and a larger selection of bullet weights. JMO

I went and looked at the rifle today and was not extremely impressed with it. I dont really think the BPS sale is that great either because at store I went into they had the gun with an adjustable scope for $270.

My experience with BPS sales is that they ain't that great--you can usually find the item for the same price (or less!) closer to home. My experience with Savage is that they are good solid rifles, right out of the box.
