Can't speak on the Nikon but I love my Diamondback! It's my primary hunting optic on my 6.8 AR.
I've got it sitting in a LaRue mount and holds zero perfectly with repeated on/off of the rifle. Mine is the 4-12x40. If I could do it over I'd go 3-9x40. I really have no need for that x12 power. lol
I don't use the BDC for it's designed purpose but Kentucky Windage is easy enough. The glass is amazing. The lines on the reticle are clean and sharp.
When I was doing my research I couldn't find a single bad word on the Diamondback and after having used it on a couple hunts and at the range a few times I know why. It is nothing short of an amazing piece of glass for the price point. I think I got mine right at 200.00 from Amazon.com. One thing I read while doing my research that kind of swayed my decision was where a guy had posted that he had been a Leupold guy for as long as he could remember but after trying a Diamondback he'd never but another Leupold.

I have two of the Diamondbacks and love them. For the price point, they ate top notch. But I have no experience with the Buckmaster. Vortex is a top tier company with top tier customer service.

I have used both, I currently own seven Diamondbacks.
Both are very close just by appearence and both work very well, but what did it for me was the reticle.
Several guys like Nikon's BDC, I'm personally not a fan of it. I feel that it is a little too thick. It is very useable, but it just didn't appeal to me.
The Diamondback on the other hand has a thinner reticle and with the hash marks, I feel that it doesn't cover up as much rea estate if you will.
Don't get me wrong though, Nikon is very appealing, but I prefer their Nikoplex to their BDC reticle.

Good feedback guys.
Skylar - I just want to make sure the reticle isn't too fine. I have a springfiels armory scope on now and unless it is perfect conditions I can't hardly see the cross hais. Could be the scope though cause it used to not be that way. Even on the 40mm I just want to be sure I can see reticle closer to dark.
I have diamondback 10x50 binos and I absolutelt love them.

I don't honestly think it is too thin. Here's the subtensions for you. And a as close to represented picture of the reticle.

I've used the diamondback for night hunting with a kill light quite a few times and its been just wonderful I like the bcd reticle as well, consistant hits on 400 yard gong

I'd choose Vortex over Nikon. I have had both scopes and have enjoyed the Vortex so much more.

I have many successful years with the Nikons (great scopes over time) without problems. I currently own a half dozen Nikon scopes (no buckmasters series though) that are on various specific purpose firearms, seldom have to re-zero them even after traveling. I purchased a 2x7 Vortex Viper several years ago for a close encounter hog gun...absolutely love it....fast target acquisition, clear, stable...a quality scope. I don't think you would go wrong either way. Personally, I would buy the Diamondback just because I want to try one out.

I think I have decided on the diamondback. We get any discount on swfa for being thf members?

Well, I cannot waive the Tax, that would be illegal, but we will pay the tax for you.

Skylar I will be calling as soon as I get out of the field to purchase one myself. Very impressed with all the reviews I've read. Any military discount. If not I'm fine with it the price is great.

I bought a vortex diamondback today and too it to the range. The first 12 shots were fine and when I looked thru the scope to fire the 13th it was all blurry. I don't know what happened. Guess Ill take it back and get something else

Skylar was exceptionally helpful when I was setting up the optics on my AR. Nothing but good things to say about SWFA.

I know there's all kinds of positive comments on the Vortex but I have had a few Buckmasters. You get the right one, they won't do you wrong. I'm no fan of BDC either, it's Nikoplex for me too. I have been eyeballing Vortex lately though. Favorite reticle is the fine crosshairs. I like old school on some things.

I have several Vortex Viper's, Monarch's and Buckmaster's and prefer the Viper line, but I think the Buckmaster is a much better scope than the Diamondback.
