I have not checked this forum lately, sorry for the long delay. I finally got my gun safe fixed. I called Cannon and they did send me a new S&G electronic lock, but they could not do anything for me about the labor except recommend Texas Safe & Lock. I called them up and a very nice man came out and removed my old lock and installed my new one. It cost me $150, but it would have cost $300-400 if I did not have it open to begin with. When we went to fill the feeders around Labor Day, Cannon tech support, after asking me if it was a new battery, if it was a copper-top Duracell, and if I was using the correct combination, they told me to enter the combo while simultaneously rotating the handle in both directions. After only trying 2-3 times I was able to open it in this manner. It was very easy to change out as I watched the guy do it, I listed some notes below. Wish I would have checked this post before though because got a feeling you would have told me how to do this safebuilder. Thanks anyway.
Method Of Replacing Gun Safe Lock 1) With the safe open, push the fire-break panel on the door up by pushing something up through the two holes on the bottom of the door, and remove the panel. 2) Remove the two screws on re-locker panel on inside of door and remove the panel paying close attention to pin that re-locker panel fits onto because will have to make sure goes back on this pin exactly the same way during installation. 3) Remove the 3 screws on the backside of locking mechanism once the re-locker panel has been removed. 4) Pop off the S&G logo on front of keypad on front of door to safe, then remove the screw that is behind that logo. 5) Disconnect both ribbon cables. There is one for the battery and one that goes from keypad to locking mechanism. The locking mechanism is activated electronically by a solenoid. 6) Remove the two screws that attach the keypad housing to the front of the door of the safe. 7) Reinstall everything back the way it was removed. Make sure and put screws back in same location they came from. The screw behind the battery is flat and if you accidentally put the wrong screw back in here it makes it where you cannot get the battery back in.

Yeah, if it happens again, no doubt will go back with mechanical. By the way, the locksmith said S&G makes a great mechanical lock, but not so great an electronic lock, and LaGard makes a great electronic lock, but not so great mechanical lock.
Mine did not have any problems after only 4 months either. It showed up after about 2 years. Is yours the same kind as mine?

I have a Cannon 24 gun safe that I bought new in December 2009 from Costco. I continually have problems opening it and am too stubborn to send it back to Cannon to fix which would mean unloading it and shipping it back to them. Usually if I keep trying I can eventually get it open, although there have been a few times I thought I was going to have to cancel a hunting trip because of it. Needless to say, if I had to get in the safe quickly and my life depended on it, things might not end very well.
I have checked the battery and it is ~9.5 volts, so no problem there. I was just wondering if anyone has had problems opening these safes. It is an SG electronic lock with a 6 digit code. Thanks.
I always us Duracell batteries, never any problems....Also, I always keep my "life depended on them" weapons out of the safe...in "life depends on them locations" (i.e.., bedside, doors, couch, pocket, etc.) In short, you can't defend your life with a weapon that is unloaded and stored in a safe....hope this information helps.

Yeah, I always use the Duracell also, but there really was a problem with this lock. Once I got it changed out, it works great. I hate to say it, but although I would keep guns everywhere if I was single, I got a weird feeling something worse would happen if I left them out than if I keep them locked up and take my chances on being defenseless. I got two dogs that would give me enough warning to get hold of my loaded 454 casull from the safe, but hopefully that time will never come.
