I am new to hunting and I am going to do a couple mid week day hunts in November. I will be using a smoothbore sighted shot gun to hunt with either slugs or buckshot.
My question is has anyone hunted there and what is a good approach to hunting there. stalking, climbing tree stand, sit against a tree. Just need a few pointers from seasoned hunters that have hunted LBJ or other public areas to help. Thanks

Go far away from the parking lots. Stalking or sitting will work.

Go far away from the parking lots. Stalking or sitting will work. Way, way, way far away from parking lots, if it looks like a parking spot, go way way way far away from it. 15 years ago you couldn't use buck shot, slugs only.

Last time I hunted lbj (2 years ago). Buckshot and slugs were legal there. Call the office in Decatur and ask for sure.

I have a new haven 12 guage pump with a smooth bore slug barrel with open sights. It hits 3-4"right off bulls eye at 50 yards with slugs. the sights are not adjustable so I will go with it. I just want to hunt some just to get out. I did call and Does are only available to hunt Nov.28-Dec 1st. No permit required.

It may be possible to put something on the right side of the V like a few pieces of tape, or crazy glue small banding shim/s, or a bead of solder, or small bead of JB weld and then paint or magic marker it to get it shootin center. (or the like) You wouldn't have to use as much kentucky windage and I'm not talking about the 12 year old stuff in a quicker or more excited shot on a deer. You might also find to be more confident on a misjudged range of 75 yards or so.

would a ground blind or a tree stand work for LBJ? you cant leave it up permanent so I am thinking a popup ground blind may work

Never used a blind or chair there. I just sit in some brush under a tree with a cushion. Much easier than toting all that junk in my opinion.

Sit on a bucket under a tree

lightweight popup, brush it in real good. I've left one up there before and either no one saw it or no one bothered it. Good luck up there.

Map can be found on Wikipedia, but the best thing would have been getting a map before the gov shutdown.

Yea, but until the day before opening day I had a place to go do a little hunting. It fell through last minute. Think I found it. Now just have to get out there

First you need to understand all the game laws. Contact the national forest service station in Decatur for current rules and regulations. But yes, with proper credentials, license, blaze orange attire, etc. you can literally walk right in and hunt.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.
